08:00 - 17:00
Digital Oilfield: From Business Case Definition to Implementations Success Stories
Instructor(s) Luigi Saputelli

In the last two decades, the upstream oil industry has faced an exponential increase of the use of real-time data and field actuating devices, which have led to numerous digital oilfield (DOF) implementations. These have demonstrated value to drive operations efficiency, optimise production, and maximise hydrocarbon recovery factor with better, faster decisions while reducing health, environmental and safety risks.

08:00 - 17:00
Carbonate Reservoir Characterization and Modelling
Instructor(s) Jorge Gomes

This one day course is an overview of the standard workflows adopted in the industry for G&G, petrophysical and SCAL data, to be integrated in a consistent manner to build a coherent 3D static model of the reservoir. The instructor will explain how static data (seismic, geology, petrophysics) and dynamic data (SCAL, well test data) are validated and integrated into a 3D model. During the first hours the participants will be introduced to the basic concepts of sedimentology, diagenesis, and sequence stratigraphy and their implications on reservoir architecture.

08:00 - 17:00
Field Piloting for EOR/IOR Schemes
Instructor(s) Ashok K. Singhal

Since Enhanced/ Improved Oil Recovery (EOR/ IOR) schemes in a given reservoir involve significant financial risks due to various uncertainties, it is prudent to ‘pilot’ them in a small, representative portion of the property. If determined to be technically and financially viable, the scheme could be subsequently expanded to a commercial size operation. Besides reducing uncertainties, pilots provide an opportunity to unravel/resolve many potential issues. Therefore, specific objectives drive the nature of pilots and interpretation strategies. These in turn determine requirements for facilities, and operating guidelines including specific surveillance and monitoring plans. This workshop will provide participants an opportunity to review and learn various strategies for piloting Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).

In teaching this course, the instructor plans to: (1) spend most of the time discussing the practical aspects of EOR pilots, and keep discussion of the theoretical topics to bare minimum, (2) discuss economics of EOR pilots, and (3) provide each course attendee a workbook containing copies of the instructors’ PowerPoint presentations, and solutions to the class problems.

08:00 - 17:00
Laboratory and Field Determination of Residual/Remaining Oil Saturation and Defining the Target for EOR
Instructor(s) Shehadeh K. Masalmeh

Characterising residual (Sor) and remaining oil saturation (ROS) and their distribution is a significant factor in managing ongoing waterflooding and the selection of EOR methods that are applicable and economically suitable for oil reservoirs. It is important to distinguish between un-swept oil (which is usually mobile) and residual oil saturation to waterflood which is capillary-bound and immobile. This highlights the importance of direct observation of sweep (observation wells, coring, etc.) and the proper determination of residual oil saturation in the laboratory.

For mobilising the target oil and selecting the appropriate EOR methods we need to understand 1) How much is the residual/remaining oil saturation, 2) Where is the remaining oil saturation in the reservoir, 3) Why is the oil left behind and 4) What can we do to mobilize residual/remaining oil saturations.

08:00 - 17:00
Underbalanced and Managed Pressure Drilling Technologies
Instructor(s) Hani Qutob

The recent decline in the oil and gas prices and the difficulty in finding new reserves prompted the oil and gas industry to look for ways of substantially increasing recovery factors associated with mature fields and reducing the costs related to conventional drilling problems. This is where the UBD and MPD technologies can make a difference.

When the UBD and MPD technologies are coordinated with an expert system for screening the accurate technology application, it works wonders—resulting in reducing drilling time by eliminating lost circulation and differential sticking, along with increasing rate of penetration, improving production by reducing formation damage, and providing real time reservoir evaluation. The results—enhanced ultimate recovery and improved net present value.

This course provides an introduction and application of the techniques that can be utilised in UBD and MPD. It is intended to provide an overview of current technologies, where, when and how it can be applied.

08:00 - 17:00
Flow Assurance and Production Chemistry Course
Instructor(s) Ali Moosavi, Dalia Abdallah and Gordon M. Graham

Flow assurance in the oil and gas industry refers to the systems put in place to guarantee uninterrupted profitable and sustainable flow of hydrocarbons from the reservoir to surface facilities and ultimately to refineries. Flow assurance challenges include: inorganic scale, asphaltene, wax, corrosion, hydrates, etc. Managing these challenges are becoming more complex because of development of fields under harsher conditions e.g. HPHT reservoirs, sour reservoirs, heavy oil; in addition to further implementation of EOR (gas injection, chemical, surfactant and polymer floods). Different engineering and chemical solutions can be put in place to manage these challenges.

08:00 - 17:00
Enterprise Risk Management, Crises Management and Business Continuity
Instructor(s) Ahmed AL Menhali and Abdulla Al Marzooqi

For the past few years, national and international events led many bodies such as governments, public and other private sectors to stress and actively promote the view that a robust and an effective level of Crises Management, and proven Business Continuity Management (BCM) readiness and capability are very essential to ensure that leaders and executives are in a position to control, mitigate crisis and continue returning to normal business in an efficient and timely manner.

08:00 - 17:00
Multiphase Pumping: Fundamentals to Field Applications
Instructor(s) Hisham Saadawi

Multiphase pumping encompasses many disciplines and different technologies. This course presents an overview of state-of-the-art multiphase pumping technology. It covers the various aspects of multiphase pumping from concept to field applications. The emphasis is on the practical side. It also addresses many of the implementation issues for projects involving multiphase pumping.

Global Business Leaders Session: World Oil Outlook Al Maared Hall
  • Leading through the cycle: anticipating future industry and economic pressures including the $ price per barrel. What can the industry expect short term 6–12 months? And longer term 5–10 years? And how can we continue to adapt to ensure continued growth?
  • Redefining the industry: are we actively thinking outside the norm? How are business leaders anticipating and preparing for unexpected challenges and opportunities whilst ensuring continued and improving performance with energy efficient integrated operations?
  • Sustaining oil production: how are global companies preparing to keep ahead of oil reserve depletion squeezing the last drop of conventional oil and maximising recovery rates of existing mature fields, at the same time as harnessing the search to explore new, harder to find oil discoveries? Where does tight oil, heavy oil and shale oil fit within the overall conventional oil mix?

The current downturn of the oil & gas industry challenges us in ways we may not have expected. Change may be inevitable, but what sets innovative companies apart is how they manage the transition generated by this change. A sound Research & Technology (R&T) Strategy that is agile and open‐minded during this transition enables companies to thrive with innovations.

The objective of this panel is to have distinguished R&T leaders across the energy sector to share with us how their companies/institutions are successfully managing this transition, including how to:

  • Put more focus on low hanging fruits, while maintaining a certain balance on the overall R&T
portfolio to preserve a consistent vision
  • Cut costs without hurting the business, improving the overall value
  • Explore systematically for opportunities from adjacent/cross-over technologies
  • Retain key competencies & expertise
  • Emerge stronger and more resilient after the transition

Global Business Leaders Session: The Golden Age of Gas and LNG Al Maared Hall
  • Over the next 10-15 years, what future global fuel mix will we see?  What will be the roles for coal, nuclear and renewable energies versus gas and LNG for increased domestic and industrial power needs?  Can gas make a case globally as the preferred fuel of choice over coal for power generation?  What role will gas and LNG play as a transport fuel for marine and road vehicles?
  • Are we now entering the ‘golden age for gas’ where cleaner, more flexible energy will help deliver affordable energy? Who will take the leader board in gas and LNG production and export and which new E&P stakeholder partnerships and relationships will we see emerging as a result?
  • What will the gas and LNG supply landscape look like in 5-10 years?  Will China and India become leading consumers of gas on a par with Japan and Korea?  Will Qatar and Russia see major competition from LNG’s new golden boy Australia?  What about the wildcard in the mix, Iran ramping up production?  Given current market conditions, will the US continue to benefit from their unconventional shale gas boom, continuing to influence and shape global gas production?
  • Where will the next wave of gas supply come from by 2020?  How will increased product availability in the coming 5-10 years shake up and impact global gas pricing structures?

Next Generation Leaders in a Changing World Hall A
Moderator(s) Bill Schaninger, McKinsey and A. Salim David Khemakhem, ZADCO

As the oil and gas industry faces turbulent market conditions, the need to develop leaders who are capable of creating more agile organisations is not only necessary but is a fundamental requirement to ensure its own future is not impacted by the cyclical nature of the market and the changes in the global mix of energy.

The oil and gas industry will continue to see growth driven by the need for more oil to support the increase in heavy transportation needs in developing countries and the need for natural gas to complement the surge of renewables and the decrease of use of coal in power generation.

To ensure that the industry maintains a strong leadership base, their development should be treated as a prerequisite to ongoing organisational performance and health. Developing future industry leaders requires field experience in addition to developing the right leadership skills and philosophy as it pertains to the specific sector of the industry. The development of leaders for tomorrow starts today with who (and how many) is being hired today. This long term commitment to developing a leadership cadre that is capable of being robust in the face of ongoing and rapidly changing challenges is critical. This is exacerbated by the large number of leaders who have retired recently or are currently retirement eligible. This exodus has put pressure on the industry to expedite the ascendance of young leaders to challenging roles in their organisations.

The urgency for the next generation of leaders to step into the breach is real. Our collective challenge is to ensure they are ready.

Panel Session 3: The Resilience of the Oil and Gas Industry in the Future Global Outlook Hall A
Moderator(s) Gamal Hassan, ADH International and Hatem Nuseibeh, Total

The energy industry has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty around the world, and is likely to continue to do so. However in recent years, the world energy markets have been witnessing drastic changes that undermine oil and gas companies’ efforts to contain costs and to sustain investments in the sector to meet future energy demand.

Uncertainty about global economic growth and volatility in equity and non-energy commodity markets have played significant roles in driving down the price of oil which brought gains to consumers, but can also sow the seeds of future risks to energy security. Therefore, dialogue between all producers and consumers is key to reaching a common understanding of the challenges facing the energy sector and to achieving a stable, balanced oil and gas market to help underpin global economic stability.

This executive panel discussion will examine the industry fundamentals, ranging from the shift in supply-demand fundamentals and the global energy mix, to the fluctuating dynamics of the industry, uncertainty around energy prices, and energy efficiency and climate change issues. In addition, the panel will examine the global long-term investment collapse, the loss of the United States as an anchor market and its ability to maintain its place as a major producer of both oil and gas, as well as the global shortage of human capital.

The term “easy oil” does not exist anymore, and the oil and gas industry has recently faced numerous boom & bust cycles. During prosperity, companies tend to spend and invest in new assets and push to hire more employees. In periods of downturns, oil and gas companies will campaign for radical budget cuts/optimisation, eliminating projects, lowering number of employees and even postponing critical investments in order to minimise costs, often at the long-term expense of asset performance. Economic factors sometimes put pressure on the oil and gas industry to be more cost efficient and effective at the expense of HSE.

This panel will explore the prize and anatomy of operational excellence plus the unique opportunity for the industry to realise its full promise.  Also, how operational excellence can or will drive/offer true transformation, bring stability and carry sustained benefits through both boom and bust.

Panel Session 4: The Future of Natural Gas in a More Environmentally Friendly World Hall A
Moderator(s) Ali Al Janabi, Shell and A. Salim David Khemakhem, ZADCO

The COP21 conference in Paris in December 2015 set ambitious targets for the stabilisation of temperature growth as a result of climate change. Decarbonisation of energy systems is likely to be a major component of strategies to meet these targets. The petroleum industry will need to play a key role in this decarbonisation process while still meeting growing demand for energy from the developing world.

There are a number of strategies and tactics the industry can pursue; shifting from coal and oil to gas for power generation; developing carbon capture and storage technologies; integrating gas projects with renewable energies to provide base support for intermittency; encouraging access for energy carriers such as renewably generated hydrogen in natural gas grids to supply power stations. The petroleum industry has many technologies, skills and resources which are complimentary with emerging forms of low to no carbon energy production and distribution.

This panel will explore how the oil and gas industry can complement the emergence of low carbon energy and help deliver the ambitious COP21 targets.

Panel Session 5: Operational Excellence and Efficiency Hall A
Moderator(s) Ahmad Saqer Al Suwaidi (ADMA-OPCO), Fahed Al Ameri (ADNOC) and Stephen Lloyd (Oxy)

Adding the excellence dimension to our current operational processes means adding more efficiency, better cost optimisation, improving the utilisation of resources, creative thinking & innovative approaches and improved vision through deployment of new technologies; all to maximise business outcomes and sustain successes and returns.

In this context, Operational Excellence business vision and objectives focus on more value creation as well as risk reduction. Excellence is needed now more than ever during such challenging periods where the collective utilisation of accumulated experience, collaboration, sharing best practices and learning can play a crucial part in overcoming challenges facing the oil & gas Industry. We need a new dynamic state of mind that empowers teams to continue the journey towards excellence in all aspects of operations i.e. in HSE, drilling, production operations, asset integrity, maintenance & reliability, cost & finance and quality management, facilitated by technology and innovation combined with cutting-edge IT solutions.

The success of the Operational Excellence concept is based on Leadership. Our leaders need to believe in it; energising the wave of change and inspiring their people and all team members. Our people, our most valuable assets, their competencies, behaviours and mindsets play an essential part in achieving fruitful results as we continue to strive for Operational Excellence. Enhancing and aligning the organisational culture is another key success factor.

This panel session will address, discuss and share best practices/learning experiences from the above, in light of the prevailing market conditions.

Panel topic:

Profitable University-Industry R&D Partnerships

Many interactions between universities and companies in the oil and gas sector are focused on short-term objectives, such as immediate operating problems or commercialisation of new inventions. This panel will explore the strategies to build sustainable partnerships that provide value on both sides, contributing to higher profitability in companies and supporting the academic needs of universities. Companies can gain ongoing access to strategic expertise, experimental facilities, and highly trained personnel. Universities can increase their research reputation and scope, and enhance the excellence of their faculty and educational programs.

14:00 - 15:30
Panel Session 6: The Impact of the Petroleum Industry on the World Economy Hall A
Moderator(s) Jose Pereira, Partex

Since the oil industry started, over 150 years ago, the world has become heavily dependent on this commodity. We can hardly imagine any aspect of human life that does not have a close relationship with crude oil or gas: from generation of electricity and heat to driving machinery and fueling vehicles, airplanes, ships and trains; the petrochemical industry (plastics, paints, fertilisers, detergents, etc.); and even medicine. And we all know too well how many wars have been fought (and are being fought) because of oil.

It is hard to imagine any other commodity that has such a volatile price. The usual economic factors like supply and demand, geopolitics, political events, seasonality and last but not least, hedgers and traders (the futures market) all influence the price of oil and unpredictable fluctuation of price has been the norm rather than the exception. However, such fluctuations are usually characterised by their cyclical nature and we, thus, call it “cycles”. The world economy is, indeed, very familiar with this type of scenario.

Since summer 2014, however, a different scenario has been brought to the stage, triggered by well-known factors and facts, amongst which:

  • Peak oil is currently dead
  • The US nearly doubled their crude oil production in recent years due to the development of shale oil
  • Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Algeria have lost the US market and have to compete harder in the Asian market
  • The economy of China is cooling down
  • OPEC has decided to defend market share rather than cut production

As a consequence, oil prices fell around 70% in a year and a half. The magnitude of such a fall is not a new phenomenon—one just has to go back to summer 2008 and remember the fall from $147/bbl to below $50/bbl by the end of that year. But that cycle was over in 6 months. The current scenario has stood firm since mid-2014. It is no longer a cycle. It represents a structural change in the market. A very complex situation has emerged which we will discuss during the panel session in an attempt to identify the long-term impact of the current scenario on the global economy.

Panel Session 7: HSE and Risk Management Technology Hall A
Moderator(s) Salem Saleh Al Taee, ADGAS and Troy Fields, Schlumberger

Over the last 20 years the application of Health Safety & Environment (HSE) methodologies has evolved to become an integral part of oilfield risk management and the associated complex engineering, as well as the execution of ever more challenging projects. Project complexity ranges from environmental sensitivity to high H2S or high pressure extremes. However, complexity can also be related to less obvious factors such as human behaviour, security, logistics and driving, well density or pad drilling and more stringent regulatory oversight. To say these accomplishments are solely due to engineering advancements alone would undermine the role HSE and risk management has played in achieving these goals.

At no time in history has the need for HSE risk management technology been greater than now. The business environment today has forced the petroleum industry to rebalance their corporate risk-reward equation and only those with mature HSE risk management and effective HSE integration can continue pursuing these more complex projects. This is equally true of both oil and gas companies and the contractors that provide the critical support services to the industry.

Both research and industry data show that human factors play a large part in preventing incidents.
According to the European Commission Joint Research Center (Manna 2007), issues related to human factors contribute to more than 70% of undesired events. The application of behaviour science principles to improve procedural adherence can be an effective compliment to engineering controls and other mitigation technologies. The pursuit of economically viable and challenging projects within the petroleum industry will indeed depend on the ability to adopt advancements in HSE risk management and technologies.

This panel will explore some of the advancements in HSE methods and technologies and how they can further complement the oil and gas industry.

Panel Session 8: Investment Challenges in Current Market Conditions Hall A
Moderator(s) Aqeel Madhi, NPCC

The business world has changed with markets highly uncertain and the future increasingly difficult to predict.
The record levels of production coupled with slowing economic growth in some of the key economies have compounded the current crisis. How the companies react to the current crisis will determine the future of these organisations and of the overall industry.

The highly leveraged companies, with decreasing cash flows, will struggle to continue their exploration and development activities. Under pressure from investors, even major IOC’s will have a lower appetite for risk and will take a conservative approach in their decision making, deferring or cancelling high cost and high risk projects.

It is hard to predict whether the conditions we see today will be “the new normal” in an industry known for its volatility and cyclicality. But the environment we face today calls for action and requires energy executives to reshape their companies and help them emerge from this downturn stronger. As they say “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”. To succeed in today’s environment the companies must demonstrate:

  • Financial resilience: Companies must learn to strike a balance between levels of cash generation in a lower-priced environment and their expenses. This means optimising capital structure, refinancing loans, restructuring the balance sheet reviewing the payout policies, and/or rethinking the major investment decisions.
  • Operational resilience: It is absolutely critical to deliver capital projects on time and on budget. Companies should see the downturn as an opportunity to lower their cost base and drive efficiency through Innovation. This will result in increased productivity and higher capital efficiency
  • Portfolio resilience: Companies need to look closely at their capital allocation decisions and move capital away from high-cost, lower-return projects and also consider divesting non-core businesses.Companies in a good financial position may also consider strategic acquisitions.
