Seminar: Applied Statistical Modeling and Data Analytics for Reservoir Performance Analysis Powai Ballroom
Ticketed Event
Instructor(s) Dr. Srikanta Mishra

There is a growing trend towards the use of statistical modeling and data analytics for analyzing the performance of petroleum reservoirs. The goal is to “mine the data” and develop data-driven insights to understand and optimize reservoir response. The process involves: (1) acquiring and managing data in large volumes, of different varieties, and at high velocities, and (2) using statistical techniques to discover hidden patterns of association and relationships in these large, complex, multivariate datasets. However, the subject remains a mystery to most petroleum engineers and geoscientists because of the statistics-heavy jargon and the use of complex algorithms.

This workshop will provide an introduction to statistical modeling and data analytics for reservoir performance analysis by focusing on: (a) easy-to-understand descriptions of the commonly-used concepts and techniques, and (b) case studies demonstrating the value-added proposition for these methods. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops to follow along the exercises in the workshop.

Topics Include:

  • Terminology and basic concepts of statistical modeling and data analytics
  • Multivariate data reduction and clustering (for finding sub-groups of data that have similar attributes)
  • Machine learning for regression and classification (for developing data-driven input-output models from production data as an alternative to physics-based models)
  • Proxy construction using experimental design (for building fast statistical surrogate models of reservoir performance from simulator outputs for history matching and uncertainty analysis)
  • Uncertainty quantification for performance forecasting

Moderator(s) Jayant Malhotra, Schlumberger
Speaker(s) Rabi Bastia, OilMax

A hydrocarbon find has always been an exploration geologist’s adventure and has remained at the forefront of the E&P cycle for the survival of the oil and gas industry. Big and easy finds are a distant past; therefore, the quest has shifted to go beyond conventional sandstones and carbonates to more complex areas of unconventionals: low porosity, low permeability, low resistivity, tight and ultra-tight, HPHT, shale, CBM, gas hydrates, and any other possible regime including deeper, geologically complex, and seismically opaque features such as salt, basalt, sub-basalt, even basement.

The focus of our discussion will revolve around the following topics:

  • Identifying New Resource Base - Doing things right, from understanding petroleum systems, to play identification and evaluation, lead and prospect assessment, and appraisal.
  • Exploiting the Existing Resource Base - Re-evaluate the assessment and appraisal with new technologies and see what wasn't visible before.
  • Re-evaluate the Formations to find missed, bypassed, or hidden oil even in Brown fields

Moderator(s) Cedric Clara, BP India

In many fields, 60% or more of the hydrocarbon in place will be left behind. The problem is well-known!

Solutions are also well-known! — Better managing the reservoir and applying the best technology. — But what is the true key to success?

While operators always aspire to maximise the recovery factor, the focus this last decade has been largely on new projects and frontier exploration. With lower commodity prices over the last few years, companies had to reinvent themselves to get more (for less) from their producing assets. The challenge does not only involve operating companies, but also includes service companies, regulator, and academia who are altogether contributing to success stories.

Improved reservoir characterisation, fit-for-purpose technologies (advanced or not), wellwork and infill drilling, facilities debottlenecks, improved and enhanced recovery techniques, supported by a better understanding of technical and commercial barriers, are among the key factors to success. Through this journey to economically increase RF, the toolkit also has evolved with better tools for systematic screening and data analytics, integrated (technical and business) models, and more rigorous performance management.

Renowned panellists will share their experience about how their organisations have successfully implemented innovative, or simply fit-for-purpose, solutions to improve recovery from their assets, and sometimes reverse the decline.

The digital revolution offers India’s oil and gas industry the opportunity to significantly improve production while also increasing asset utilisation and optimising costs. The oil and gas industry has always been a leader in data collection through deployment of sensors, monitoring equipment, and automation solutions. Industrial IOT (iIOT) offers new ways to smartly aggregate this data to drive insights that are transformational. Numerous challenges exist in India’s oil and gas industry, including those relating to data security, lack of current infrastructure, and the complex roadmap to success. There are numerous success stories emerging that showcase ways to overcome these challenges by bringing together asset operators, technology providers, and software solution providers. The objective of this session is to highlight relevant case studies related to digital transformation through implementation of iIOT.

Projects in the oil and gas industry are challenging due to increasing complexity and technological demands. Schedules and budgets are tight, safety is critical, and every project faces stakeholders concerned about the project’s impact on the environment and community. Managing the trade-offs between costs, schedule, technical solutions, and stakeholder requirements to preserve the project’s economic value is the core of all project management principles

Successful project management relies upon a coherent, consistent framework that puts in place processes enabling effective decision making.

Panel Session 5: Building Partnerships - The Way Forward Grand Ballroom 2
Moderator(s) Shobhit Tiwari, Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Limited

The oil and gas sector has multiple example of stakeholders’ collaboration to achieve desired goals. Mostly these relationships last from contract to contract and are purely of transactional nature. Recently, a new trend is emerging to promote long-lasting strategic partnership between operators and service providers to create significant value.

After almost three years, we again, started seeing increased oilfield activities and return of reasonable profit levels. However, the industry still faces many challenges to make the E&P business more profitable to avoid uncertainties that may impact the business.

The focus of this discussion will revolve around the following topics:

  • Impact of global energy market on E&P companies and their service providers
  • The evolution of relationship between these two sectors
  • The positive benefits that can be realised through application of a new business model
  • Sharing of risk and reward to promote innovation and new technology

Special Session 1: D&I - Let’s Look at the Report Card Grand Ballroom 2
Moderator(s) Sneha Chanchani, BP India

Each year organizations dedicate time and space to review and discuss diversity in the workplace. Do these discussions make a difference? Are the programs effective? This discussion will review both global and Indian E&P sector trends. Senior executives will reflect on the industry's journey and provide insights into the actions that made a difference in how diversity is created and embraced in their organizations. Actions to progress the agenda even further will be identified. The discussion will also provide insights into what individuals can do to advance the agenda for themselves and their organization.
