SPE Reservoir Characterisation and Simulation Conference and Exhibition 17 - 19 Sep 2019 Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Abu Dhabi, UAE

Schedule

Tuesday, September 17

07:30 - 17:00
08:00 - 11:00
Energy4me Science Teacher’s Workshop Meeting Room 3

Energise Your Classroom

SPE, through its Energy4me programme, will present a free one-day energy education workshop for science teachers (grades 8–12).
A variety of free instructional materials will be available to take back to the classroom. Educators will receive comprehensive, objective
information about the scientific concepts of energy and its importance while discovering the world of oil and natural gas exploration and production.

Energy4me is an energy educational public outreach programme that highlights how energy works in our everyday lives and promote information about career opportunities in petroleum engineering and the upstream professions. SPE’s Energy4me programme values the role teachers and energy professionals play in educating young people about the importance of energy. The programme recognises the need to provide factual non-biased information that can be easily used in classrooms around the globe.

From data to field development planning and management, a comprehensively complex path of data processing, analysis, interpretation, modelling, simulation, to finally planning and management. Each stage in this path is full of unknowns and uncertainties. But what if each stage is connected to the other? What if the changes in each stage can be easily understood by the stage before it and the stage after it while surface and subsurface data is continuously acquired at all stages? Can unknowns and uncertainties be optimised? What are the obstacles ahead of such integration along the whole value chain path? Is it the technology, the process or people that lacks the ability to integrate? Does cloud-based artificial intelligence technology enable a faster route to integration and a better decision? If technology can break the barriers between the different disciplines (people) and the communication stages (process) is automated, can we reach better field development planning and management decisions? And be able to construct our business plan report in one click?

Static and dynamic reservoir modelling is an important component for reliable reservoir management. Modern computer hardware routinely enables the generation of models containing millions and even billions of grid blocks. Yet, there is a fallacy in the assumption that bigger models are automatically better and improve reservoir management decisions: The underpinning modelling workflows tend to be slow and linear, the resulting models can be complex and difficult to understand, and geological uncertainty is only insufficiently explored because large models are often anchored around a single base case. Current R&D efforts aim to develop new modelling workflows that overcome these limitations.

On the one hand, surface-based modelling workflows have emerged. These workflows aim to quickly generate ensembles of geologically meaningful reservoir models which are independent of a given grid resolution and encompass a more realistic range of geological uncertainties. On the other hand, machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques offer new possibilities to extrapolate, upscale, and downscale different types of sparse geological data while accounting for inherent uncertainties.

This panel session has three key aims: (1) it will define what “better models” are; (2) it will explore current R&D trends that could provide pathways to faster and better models; and (3) it will discuss the potential benefits of new modelling workflows and the challenges that need to be overcome before we apply them routinely.

Reservoir modelling and simulation are playing an increasingly important role in the process of developing and producing hydrocarbon reserves. The technology and computational horsepower built into these tools has grown vastly in recent years, and has revolutionised our profession. They are now considered as the backbone of optimal front end loading in development projects, as well as ideal platforms for short- to mid-term production management. Hydrocarbon accumulations, whether exploration concepts or developed projects, are now of a more complex nature than ever before: from complex structural settings (reservoir subsidence, fault reactivation, sub-salt plays, thrust belt and sub-thrust plays), to highly heterogeneous reservoirs (carbonates, naturally-fractured reservoirs, basinal shale/tight reservoirs), to more complex fluids (bitumen, tarmats, critical fluids, sour gas, etc.).

This obviously leads to more complex recovery mechanisms (EOR), complex wells, and complicated development projects, with early investments required while subsurface uncertainty remains dauntingly significant. The quest to improve the reliability and utility of reservoir modelling and simulation practices has been evolving with these newly-encountered challenges. The rapid evolution of the E&P landscape has generated a naturally increased demand in technological advances: from efficient and flexible grid generation, to multi-scenario probabilistic modelling workflows, to compositional modelling, to fracture modelling, to fine resolution of saturation front modelling, to coupling with both geomechanics and surface network modelling. With these challenges come opportunities, related to the emerging digital journey where data management, computing power, software, and discipline integration should provide the oil and gas business with greater likelihood of optimal decision-making in an intrinsically uncertain subsurface environment.
