Training Course: Applied Statistical Modeling and Data Analytics for Reservoir Performance Analysis
Ticketed Event

There is a growing trend towards the use of statistical modeling and data analytics for analyzing the performance of petroleum reservoirs. The goal is to “mine the data” and develop data-driven insights to understand and optimize reservoir response. The process involves: (1) acquiring and managing data in large volumes, of different varieties, and at high velocities, and (2) using statistical techniques to discover hidden patterns of association and relationships in these large, complex, multivariate datasets. However, the subject remains a mystery to most petroleum engineers and geoscientists because of the statistics-heavy jargon and the use of complex algorithms.

This workshop will provide an introduction to statistical modeling and data analytics for reservoir performance analysis by focusing on: (a) easy-to-understand descriptions of the commonly-used concepts and techniques, and (b) case studies demonstrating the value-added proposition for these methods. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops to follow along the exercises in the workshop.

Topics:

  • Terminology and basic concepts of statistical modeling and data analytics
  • Multivariate data reduction and clustering (for finding sub-groups of data that have similar attributes)
  • Machine learning for regression and classification (for developing data-driven input-output models from production data as an alternative to physics-based models)
  • Proxy construction using experimental design (for building fast statistical surrogate models of reservoir performance from simulator outputs for history matching and uncertainty analysis)
  • Uncertainty quantification for performance forecasting

Training Course: Production Forecasts and Reserves Estimates in Unconventional Resources
Ticketed Event
Instructor(s) W. John Lee

This course will provide training in production forecasting and reserves estimation for low-permeability resource plays (such as shales) using simple, rapidly applied decline models favored by the industry for routine forecasting. Recommended methodology will be based on fundamental fluid flow theory rather than only on experience with different modeling techniques. The course will conclude with a comparison of decline models and a suggested workflow applicable to a wide variety of models and soundly grounded in fundamentals.

Topics:

  • Fluid flow fundamentals
  • Empirical and semi-theoretical decline models including Arps, Fetkovich, Stretched Exponential, Power-Law, Transient Linear Flow, and Duong
  • Diagnostic plots for flow regime identification, pressure normalization of rate data, recommended workflow for pressure-rate-time production data analysis
  • Typical Well Production Profile (Type Well, aka Type Curve) construction

SE03  Panel: Unconventionals – Operating Best Practices and New Technology Salon E-F - Second Floor
Moderator(s) Nestor F Saavedra - Ecopetrol-ICP
Speaker(s) Daniel Valencio - Tecpetrol S.A.
The opening panel session at LACPEC will focus on technologies and field operations that improve asset development in unconventional plays. A panel of experts from operators, service companies, and academia will discuss the evolution of best practices in different basins in North and Latin America and how the knowledge exchange unlocked resources that were previously uneconomic. The panelists will also share their experience and hurdles adopting tools and workflows for reservoir characterization, drilling, well stimulation, flow assurance, and production forecasting, aimed at improving efficiency in operations and increasing recovery factors from the reservoirs. Finally, they will describe the remaining challenges in the understanding of flow mechanism and regimes, phase behavior and modeling that have resulted in a trial and error of prediction tools. Consequently, it has become a challenge the optimization of well placement, well design, production and ultimate recovery forecasting.

SE04  Panel: Unconventionals – Development, Strategies, and Emerging Plays Salon E-F - Second Floor
Moderator(s) Karin Gabriela Gonzalez - Chevron
Join the second panel session to continue the conversation on unconventional assets. The panel will be formed by industry leaders representing operators, service companies, financial institutions, and government, who will highlight key enablers to reach development milestones and strategic view on unconventional basins. The discussion will add emerging unconventional plays, describing some of the challenges to develop the resources, and why integrating and refining strategies applied to existing assets is a good starting point, but additional work needs to be done to unlock resources in new plays. A unique opportunity to hear from those commercial models that have success and those less fortunate. Opening the discussion out of the technical umbrella to review facts and practices that have played an important role in economics and commerciality of unconventional basin.

Digitalization in the oil and gas sector could be worth between USD 1.6 to 2.5 trillion for the industry, its customers, and wider society over the next decade, according to recent estimates shared in the World Economic Forum. To unlock its full potential, companies need to make digital initiatives a priority and develop a strategic roadmap that accelerates transformation across all aspects of the industry. The panel session will discuss emerging technologies that have increased productivity, made operations safer, and reduced cost in the industry. We will hear from companies that are transforming their work processes by using advanced data analytics, blockchain technology, IIoT, and other emerging technologies to improve operations and profitability. The panelists will also share their vision about future digital applications that will revolutionize the way we identify and solve problems more efficiently.

Training Course: Process Safety for E&P Operations
Ticketed Event
Instructor(s) Mark Hansen

This course provides a fundamental understanding of process safety techniques and how applying these techniques can improve safety, equipment reliability, environmental performance and reduce overall costs. It presents an overview of the elements comprising process safety, practical examples and how process safety can be integrated into day-to-day operations.

Upon completion of this course, participants will understand:

  • The evolution of process safety
  • Why process safety incidents still occur
  • Steps needed to reduce the number of incidents
  • Applicability of process safety to exploration and production operations
  • The team approach for process safety
  • Each of the elements of process safety
  • How to implement and improve process safety at your location
