Training Course Day 1: The Formation and Prevention of Oilfield Scale: From the Laboratory to the Field

This two day course is based on one that has been presented on several occasions at the SPE Oilfield Scale Conference, Aberdeen, UK. It is normally presented by three members of the Heriot-Watt University Flow Assurance and Scale Team (FAST) – Professor Eric Mackay, Professor Ken Sorbie and Mr Mike Singleton – who have a combined total of over 60 years of experience in both research and field applications in the area of oilfield scale prevention. Between them, they have written over 250 technical papers on this subject alone. This course draws very strongly on that extensive experience and provides both the underlying theory (originally developed by the authors in some cases) in an accessible manner along with concrete practical examples of how this knowledge is applied in the field.

This short course serves as both an introduction, and in places as state-of-the-art, in oilfield scale management. It is suitable for production technologists, engineers, oilfield chemists and anyone involved in flow assurance issues, working in the field, in the laboratory or in research. The basic science is illustrated by field examples and attendees will have the opportunity to see how the Heriot-Watt ScαleFAST and SQUEEZE software are used to perform scale prediction calculations and to carry out field scale inhibitor squeeze designs.

A Keynote presentation is selected by the conference committee as it is one of the highest rated abstracted submitted in the call for papers. In this keynote paper (SPE-209475) observation of magnesium rich calcite deposits occurring within subsurface safety valves (SSSV) and topside process vessels is discussed. The background to its occurrence in the North Sea and Caspian assets, challenges to normal operations and some of the chemical solutions evaluated to control fouling by this “pseudo scale” are presented.

Challenges in the industry constantly evolve driving the development of new technologies and evaluation methods. Operating conditions are becoming more challenging, e.g. HPHT deep sea, hard to inhibit sulphide scales, high shear systems that exacerbate scale formation. In this session there will be discussions that each field presents unique conditions creating a distinctive set of scaling challenges, the need to understand the scaling risks, develop robust control strategies to ensure the efficiency of any treatments is maximised. Consideration will be given to how advancements are essential to ensure that new chemicals perform effectively, are fit-for-purpose, can successfully be deployed and minimise their environmental impact.

In this keynote paper (SPE-209496) the challenge of zinc sulphide scale control via squeeze treatment at high temperature is evaluated. A thermally stable polyaniline-co-polymer based scale inhibitor (PANI-Co-Polymer SI) has been developed which shows a low minimum inhibitor concentration (<5mg/l) to prevent zinc sulphide scale formation via nucleation inhibition/growth modification and has the potential properties to adsorb/desorb effectively onto a sandstone substrate.

Field case studies are an excellent source of information on real-life scale issues. In this session, an example from the Oda Field will show how a predicted scale risk (calcium sulphate) did not materialise under production conditions. A case study from the North Sea will show how a non-THPS cleaning chemical package was developed and deployed to mitigate iron sulphide, barium sulphate and biomass deposition during produced water injection. Finally, a study from the Gulf of Guinea will show that on this field, treatment for calcium carbonate, barium sulphate and calcium sulphate scale had to be adapted for individual wells.

This session highlights the importance of improving scale treatments, by utilising existing techniques and technologies in an optimal manner to get the best outcome. The session covers both lab and simulation studies. A varied range of techniques are covered including the use of magnets for prevention of scale and the advantages of exploiting synergistic effects from inhibitor blends. A case study is also presented looking at the requirement for an alternative approach for field redevelopment.
