Welcome Message

Dear Colleagues,

2020 was a remarkable year for the petroleum industry. For the first time, we have seen a sudden drop in oil consumption by several millions of barrels per day and negative oil prices. On the other hand, the oil demand is picking-up and almost 100 mn bbl/d have to be delivered and replaced to meet the World’s oil demand.

Digitalisation, which was already prior to the Covid-19 pandemic an important topic for the petroleum industry, has gained momentum in facilitating cooperation during the lockdown. The 2021 SPE EUROPEC conference, which is featured at the 82nd EAGE Annual Conference and Exhibition, is covering digitalization amongst other topics. There will be sessions about “data driven methodologies, decisions and uncertainties”, “field appraisal and developing”, “reservoir characterization, surveillance and management” highlighting the latest developments in these fields including cross-discipline aspects.

Other sessions for example on “EOR/IOR”, “dynamic well and reservoir modelling” and “unconventional resources” are geared towards sharing in-depth results in these areas enabling to economically produce hydrocarbons from increasingly complex reservoirs containing difficult to produce fluids. A unique opportunity for participants in the SPE EUROPEC is to listen to and learn from EAGE presentations of experts from disciplines such as for example sedimentology and geophysics. Another feature of the event is the large exhibition where numerous service providers will show their recent developments and tools.

I am sure that participation in the integrated SPE EUROPEC and EAGE conference will be a rewarding experience and lead to numerous interesting discussions, new ideas, and networking opportunities.

I am looking forward to seeing you in Amsterdam in 2021!

Torsten Clemens
