Session 1: ERD Wells Design Considerations to Achieve Highest Desired Reach
Session Chairpersons Alan Iravani, NOV; Som Valliyappan, BesteBit

Many things need to be considered when determining the economic and engineering visibility of drilling ERD wells. While historically definition of an ERD well was one that reached a MD/TVD ratio of 2:1 that has broadened to include many different scenarios. This session will include a range of wells with lateral departures of up to 25,000 feet and the challenges associated with those applications.

This session will highlight main cons and pros of extended reach drilling and make an economic comparison of field development using highly deviated laterals versus a more conventional lower deviation departure. Furthermore, comparing opex and capex versus recoverable reserves this session will highlight challenges associated with re-entry ERD wells, reservoir monitoring and selective water shutoff.

15:30 - 17:00
(continued) Session 1: ERD Wells Design Considerations to Achieve Highest Desired Reach
Session Chairpersons Alan Iravani, NOV; Som Valliyappan, BesteBit

ERD wells by nature, demand attention to not only individual components in drill string but how they work as a system to deliver desired performance. This session’s focus topic is the interrelationship among these various components involved in the process of such complex drilling. These include but not limited to design of special equipment needed weather they are surface or subsurface such as  rig, drill string, BHA and bit as required by today’s demanding ERD wells.

This session will also cover how these components will need to interact to enable operator achieving desired reach. Optimisation of key parameters such as torque and drag will also be explored.

Wednesday, May 26

08:00 - 08:30
08:30 - 10:30
Session 2: Software Simulations Tools and Onsite/Realtime Monitoring of ERD Wells
Session Chairpersons Arhama Al Shamsi, ADNOC; Wael Abdelhamed, Al Yasat Petroleum

ERD well construction process involves several stages of detailed engineering and learnings. Advanced software modules plays fundamental role in well design, running various simulations including hydraulics, torque and drag, and vibrations analysis. Along with recent advances in oil and gas sensing hardware and data transmission, the real-time operation support centres “RTOC” rapidly evolved from performance monitoring and currently achieved full integration between software modules, real-time monitoring, and decades of oilfield experience.

10:30 - 11:00

11:00 - 12:30
Session 3: Understanding Tubular Run Challenges and Solutions During Completion Runs
Session Chairpersons Shamsa Al Menhali, ADNOC Onshore; Douglas Smith, Independent

When planning ERD wells it is imperative to understand the challenges of running completion tubulars such as, but not limited to, hole condition problems, liner accessories, circulation requirements, and rotational limitations. In this session we would like to address those challenges by reviewing best practices and proposed solutions including the utilisation of CRT’s and low-marking grip mechanisms for high chrome tubulars.

12:30 - 13:30

13:30 - 15:00
Session 4: Drilling Fluids, Mud Breaker and Completion Fluids Design Considerations
Session Chairpersons Wael Abdelhamed, Al Yasat Petroleum; Jon Molster, ADNOC Offshore

Drilling and completion fluids design are key factors in the construction of ERD wells. It involves aspects that can pose significant challenges, this includes narrow mud weight/FRAC gradient window, ECD management, lubricity, hole cleaning, cuttings convey, borehole stability.

Historically oil or synthetic base muds tended to be the fluids of choice. Currently and due to stringent environmental restrictions, industry is thriving to develop more inhibitive water base mud in conjunction with suitable lubricants, torque and drag reducer products.

The continuous development of advanced software modules for hydraulics and hole cleaning plays fundamental role in the success of ERD wells as it.

15:00 - 15:30

15:30 - 17:00
Session 5: Reservoir Liner Design
Session Chairpersons Shamsa Al Menhali, ADNOC Onshore; Peter Levison Mwansa, ADNOC Onshore

The oil and gas industry is a required business that brings energy in our daily need life. Understanding your reservoirs characteristics will help you to maximise the oil and gas recover factor which will end up with a high IRR.

Well design and in particular the reservoir liner design is important for well integrity and well life-cycle.

In this session, we will address the challenges associated with drilling operation and technology implementation in liner design. Several factors that need to be considered for reservoir liner design such as; friction factor and precautionary trip run required, centralisation for zonal isolation, types of swell packer, and wellbore clean-up tool.

Thursday, May 27

08:00 - 08:30
08:30 - 10:30
Session 6: New Technologies
Session Chairpersons Saad Shammari, Saudi Aramco; Som Valliyappan, BesteBit

Extended reach drilling offers challenges during the planning and execution of different phases during drilling operations. Innovation is the key factor to address the challenges and drill these wells safely and cost-effective. Introduction of new technologies that push the drilling boundaries further in drilling rigs capabilities, wellbore construction, petro-physical data acquisition, completion design, and developing complex reservoirs while eliminating operational and safety risks and extending the life the well makes ERD projects economical and attracting for operators to purse.

11:00 - 12:30
Session 6: ERD Wells Best Practices
Session Chairpersons Duane Luke Hatton, ADNOC Drilling; Hernan Melgares, Schlumberger

In this session we focus on the keys to robust drilling and completion operations and how to minimise NPT for both surface and subsurface equipment failures.

We discuss all aspects of hole cleaning, the different connection practices, also the “when, why, and if” there is a need to wash and ream at connections; if so then discuss the different reaming procedures.

Lastly, we look at tripping and what is needed to safely trip out of hole and best tripping practices; whether backreaming is good, bad, or just a habit? What’s observed during bBackreaming, when to Backream and how to do it safely?

12:30 - 13:30
