About the Workshop

As the drive to scale up hydrogen production accelerates, the timing of this workshop could not be more relevant.

The majority of oil and gas majors are already increasing their exposure to hydrogen production and storage. In order to meet the net zero GHG emission targets in both the UK and the EU, the energy mix will have to include both blue and green hydrogen.

As major oil & gas operators are now shifting completely away from produced oil and focusing on gas assets, the next natural step is to convert to blue hydrogen through Steam Methane Reformation, (SMR) and Carbon Capture and Underground Storage, (CCUS). Other operators are heavily invested in European Hydrogen Hubs such as the Port of Rotterdam.  There is also now a recognised trend of oil and gas majors investing in offshore wind farms and these assets will ultimately support the production of green hydrogen. As economies of scale increase, the cost of green hydrogen production will come down.

The EU Green Deal has now been announced and there is a strong bias towards hydrogen, which has largely been championed by Germany, but all EU member states are following suit. Blue hydrogen as of now is still the fastest route to market for hydrogen, but the industry will have to act fast to capture the maximum benefit for oil and gas operators.

Throughout this workshop, the merits of blue hydrogen and how the sector can champion this market through technology development and deployment will be discussed.

Why Attend?

  • An SPE workshop is a multi-day event that fosters knowledge sharing in an intensive learning experience. It provides brief technical presentations followed by extensive Q&A and discussion.
  • The workshop’s programme committee members solicit presentations from top industry professionals. This ensures a robust technical program with presentations that are laser-focused on critical industry topics.
  • Since proceedings are not published, SPE workshops provide an environment for frank, open discussion. Presentations are provided to participants after the workshop, if approved for release.
  • Presentations may not have promotional or commercial elements, so the agenda is truly an objective review of the technical topics.
  • SPE workshops are highly focused on a given technical topic and provide attendees with an in-depth review in a short amount of time. The agendas include research-based, field-tested industry topics so attendees receive current, relevant technical knowledge.
  • Income from this event will be invested back into SPE to support many other Society programmes. When you attend an SPE event, you help provide even more opportunities for industry professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence. Scholarships, certification, the Distinguished Lecturer programme, and SPE’s energy education programme Energy4me® are just a few examples of programmes supported by SPE.

What You Receive

  • Released copies of the workshop presentations will be available to attendees following the conclusion of the workshop. Speakers do not write formal papers and are not expected to release their presentations for publication.
  • Attendees qualify for 1.6 SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU). One CEU equals 10 contact hours of participation. CEUs will be awarded through SPE Professional Development for participation and completion of SPE workshop. A permanent record of a participant's involvement and awarding of CEUs will be maintained by SPE.
