Hydraulic fracturing technology has gone through significant developments via continuous advances and method improvements in its application. These advances and improvements have brought hydraulic fracturing to new heights and new geographies in the oil and gas industry having contributed significantly to the reduction in the development costs of many resources. The advances potentially offer a more creative, effective and energy-efficient way of developing valuable and more difficult to produce oil and gas resources.

With the theme “Fracturing—Accessing the Molecules and Enhancing Recovery”, this edition will discover advancements in hydraulic fracturing technologies and methods. Key discussions will explore how current and new technologies can be utilised to bring the required paradigm shift in oil and gas development through enhancing accessibility to oil and gas resources more effectively and efficiently and hence enhancing recovery. With the traditional oil and gas recovery methods reaching maturity in many fields, most oil and gas is still trapped or inaccessible with conventional technologies, the advances of hydraulic fracturing can bring new life to these fields and sustain the world’s energy supply in a more competitive and acceptable manner.

Experts from around the globe will gather in Oman, to discuss, share their experience and expertise, and draw an exciting outlook for the oil-gas energy sector.

In the past decade, we have seen tremendous technical advances in hydraulic fracturing stimulated by the rapid developments in the unconventionals business in North America. Such technologies are increasingly being applied in conventional oil and gas reservoirs to improve recovery, enhance production while reducing technical unit costs. The application is also being extended from well stimulation to increase injectivity and productivity thereby improving and enhancing recovery at the reservoir inter-well scale for both new and mature developments.

This panel session will feature technical experts and leaders from both operating and service companies to share their experience and knowledge in hydraulic fracturing, focusing on  technology and capability aspects.  It will address the latest advances in technology and applications, for example, sweet spotting, well placement, fracturing design and execution, fibre-optics based monitoring and surveillance, production forecast, and minimising environmental impact to name a few. We also expect to hear in the presentations and discussions recent examples of applying data analytics and AI technology in optimising hydraulic fracturing and speeding up data analysis as a compliment to traditional physics-based design and analysis workflows.

Technology application goes hand-in-hand with capability development in achieving the overall technical and business objectives. Panelists will share their insights and know-how in capability development, including training and coaching as well as improved workflow and application of data analytics in hydraulic fracturing and inter-disciplinary integration to link well stimulation and production technology with geosciences and reservoir engineering.

We stand today at the doorsteps of a new era in the oil and gas industry with significant challenges facing the industry. Of these, environmental and sustainability aspects do feature very high. With the strong drive towards achieving highenergy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) leading to net-zero emission by year 2050, hydraulic fracturing could provide innovative solutions in this area. Building on the technological advances and innovative HF-based recovery processes, solutions to the environmental and sustainability challenges can be devised and enhanced.

In this panel, we shall look at how the HF technologies and deployed methods have dealt with the environmental and sustainability aspects, and what learnings we can draw to guide us in addressing future challenges, considering more stringent environmental protection rules and requirements. With an opportunistic lens, can HF offer a paradigm shift in oil and gas recoveries that will eliminate and reduce required resources and efforts to produce hydrocarbon resources, that will continue to provide a significant portion of the world’s energy needs.

Experts and leaders in oil and gas development will share, as panelists, their own and their organisations’ experiences and perspectives, future strategies and plans, to address ESG considerations, challenges, and opportunities.

Currently, the development of the global economy, has imposed a rapid evolution of all organisations, that has guided them to review and challenge their operational practices. There is an old proverb which says, “necessity is the mother of invention”, and it is precisely this aspect which is leading all organisations to identify new opportunities for more efficient business delivery, and this has become clear in all areas of the oil and gas industry during the last year, and hydraulic fracturing is not an exception.

Hydraulic fracturing is a key enabler for the development of unconventional resources, and it will be for the foreseeable future. This session is intended to serve as a platform to discuss how improvements in the implementation of hydraulic fracturing are executed, challenging old industry paradigms that are based on long-held beliefs. It will address how improvements on hydraulic fracturing implementation efficiency, are being explored through holistic approaches that include the combination of subsurface characterisation, and well construction and completion, helping to identify fit-for-purpose hydraulic fracture technologies oriented to reduce CapEx and improve hydrocarbon deliverability. It will promote the discussion of how data analytics and advancements in artificial intelligence are currently used, and their future role in the effective deployment of hydraulic fracturing.

This is a set of topics that will open the discussion among operators, service companies, technical institutions and R&D organisations, helping to frame the challenges and opportunities in order to continue driving operational excellence and efficiency across the oil and gas industry.
