SPE Disciplines
We organize our activities into eight primary disciplines, offering news and programs tailored to each area. Since oil and gas is a high-technology industry, many of our members may have interests in more than one area.
Completions
Topics in the Completions discipline include completion design and installation, intelligent wells, sand control, hydraulic fracturing, acidizing and stimulation, and well integrity. Peer-reviewed papers are published in SPE Drilling and Completion journal.
Data Science and Engineering Analytics
Topics include information systems, data use and management with specializations covered in technical sections and articles published in the Data Science and Digital Engineering online magazine.
Drilling
The Drilling discipline covers topics from well planning and wellbore design through drilling equipment, systems and operations, to casing and cementing. Special interests are supported through three technical sections, and peer-reviewed papers are published in the SPE Drilling and Completion journal.
Facilities Design, Construction, and Operation
Topics include processing systems and design, flow assurance, subsea operations, measurement and control, platforms and floating systems, facilities operations, pipelines, flowlines and risers, and facilities operations. Peer-reviewed papers and articles are published in the Oil and Gas Facilities online magazine.
Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability
Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability focuses on topics such as workplace hazards, employee safety, facilities and data security, community outreach, as well as research and sustainability issues. Specializations are covered through workshops, publications, and international HSE events.
Management
Topics range from strategic planning to energy economics with specializations covered in Technical Sections. Peer-reviewed papers, as well as Management–related articles, are published in the SPE Economics & Management journal.
Production and Operations
This discipline focuses on topics such as design and optimization, artificial lift systems, production enhancement, production monitoring and control, oilfield chemistry and multiphase flow. Specializations are covered in Technical Interest Groups and peer-reviewed papers are published in the journal SPE Production & Operations.
Reservoir
Reservoir topics include simulation and formation evaluation, geology and geophysics, unconventionals, and enhanced recovery processes. Specializations are covered in Technical Interest Groups, technical sections, global events, and the peer-reviewed journal SPE Reservoir Evaluation and Engineering.
