2011 SPE President Alain Labastie Visits Tyumen State Oil and Gas U. in Russia

studentchapter2011 SPE President Alain Labastie recently visited Tyumen State Oil and Gas University to learn more about the university, exchange knowledge and plan workshops, and to meet and establish good relations with the TSOGU SPE Student Chapter and other oil & gas professionals in the region. The university met Mr. Labastie with a traditional bread-and-salt welcome and Russian folk songs.
Mr. Labastie was first shown university facilities and results of the school’s scientific efforts. He saw an up-to-date TSOGU cementing laboratory, new equipment, and training materials. The delegation was directed to the multimedia room where they saw new software products and simulators that were developed in the university. Mr. Labastie then participated in the space bridge with Saint-Petersburg Mining Institute.

Mr. Labastie was glad to talk with chapter representatives. Aleksey Borisenko (2010 president of TSOGU SPE Student Chapter) spoke about chapter activities, which included organizing conferences, technical meetings, trips to the training centers and laboratories, participation in paper contests and scholarship programs, organizing internships of students in oil & gas companies and service companies. In the near future, the chapter is planning to host Leoben chapter representatives in their field trip to Russia at the end of March, a trip to the conference “East Meets West” in Krakow, Poland, and to organize annual conference IOGC 2010 – IV International Oil & Gas Conference for students and YP over Russia and CIS, which is called “Up-to-date Technologies for Western Siberia Fuel-Energy Complex”.

Alain Labastie had already visited other Russian universities in Moscow and Ufa. When asked about his feelings about the university, Mr. Labastie said he was impressed by the University’s world-class facilities  and the opportunities students have to become great engineers and specialists. In his opinion, Tyumen State Oil and Gas University is a world-class one.
