Congratulations to RICE UNIVERSITY & UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON Student Chapter – Student Chapter of the Month for April! Although this is smaller chapter compared to many of the others, they have accomplished big things.
The students met and exceeded their goals when Rice University, without a separate Petroleum Engineering program, were able to increase their membership 130 to 200! They have successfully organized more than one chapter activity per month.
Many of the chapter members are part-time students in the Masters Petroleum Engineering Program. This results in difficulty locating sufficient volunteers to organize events. Through their diligence, they have been able to successfully overcome this obstacle and recruit enthusiastic volunteers from University of Rice and University of Houston! They have developed a new initiative of presenting certificates to their volunteers as tokens of appreciation. A robust plan resulted in the students being able to offer free events to all registered SPE members. They have received sponsorships from Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, Marathon Oil and National Oilwell Varco to support events and activities for the chapter.
Activities and service projects include: Visit to Weiss Energy Hall at Houston Museum of Natural Sciences; Guest Presentation by Russ Buettner from Marathon Oil; Visit to Oceanstar Drilling Rig Museum; Visit to Schlumberger’s Sugarland product center and San-Felipe Research Center; Hosting a seminar on Globalization featuring Sid Smith and Jerry Gauche; hosting Distinguished Guest Speaker series by Larry Lake from UT Austin; and a bowling night.
Their future plans include another field trip; two technical seminars, a social event and a joint seminar with the SPE Young Professionals group of Houston.
Keep up the great work Rice University and University of Houston Student Chapter – Congratulations for being selected SPE Student Chapter of the Month for April!
