We are happy to announce that this year’s Gus Archie Scholarship has been awarded to Darian Kane-Stolz. The Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship is supported by the SPE Foundation and awards an outstanding student who plans to enter a university and pursue an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering.
Miguel Mendoza is a resident of Houston, Texas, where he was born. The son of Miguel Mendoza and Nora Sosa, he attended Galena Park High School and graduated as valedictorian. He currently attends the University of Texas at Austin, where he is working toward a degree in petroleum engineering.
Mendoza was a tuba player in the Galena Park High School Band of Gold, earning All-Region and All-Area honors in 2013 and 2014. During his senior year, he was voted band president and appointed field captain. Mendoza hopes to continue performing as part of the Longhorn Band.
He was also a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (National Honor Society), the Spanish Honor Society, the Interact Club, and Texas Future Music Educators. CollegeBoard named him a National Hispanic Scholar for his academic achievements.
Miguel Mendoza’s interest in petroleum engineering arose when he traveled across Texas to visit his family in El Paso. He saw oil drills off in the distance as they rode on the highway and wanted to find out more about them. Living in the city known as the “Energy Capital of the World” gave him even more exposure to the wonders that the energy industry can create. After obtaining his degree, he plans on returning to Houston to help innovate the petroleum and energy industry.
