Penn State SPE participates in National Engineering Week

penn1Penn State SPE participated, along with Pittsburgh SPE, in National Engineering Week at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA, 20-21 February. National Engineering Week includes a large recruiting/career day that takes place every year and is open to people of all ages. Both groups worked with elementary-aged kids up to adults. The young students were able to work with sand art and create their own oil reservoir. Continue reading

Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering hosts a video show

video1Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering hosted a video show, “A Day in Exxon Rig, Gulf of Mexico” on 3 March for 31 attendees. The programme was held at the Conference Hall with the aim to help the students get familiarized with offshore rigs and its operations.

Kyoto University SPE Student Chapter hosts seminar

kusc-100x52Kyoto University SPE Student Chapter – KUSC hosted a workshop at the Katsura Campus for around 46 attendees on 7 January. This seminar was a kind of “recruitment workshop,” based on presentations given by the companies which introduced their activities to the students, bringing also some technical information about drilling, equipments, business and oil exploration related activities. Universidad Nacional del Comahue hosts conference

visit-100x781The Universidad Nacional del Comahue (UNC) hosted the 4th Annual SPE Argentine Student Chapters conference in Neuquen.  Representatives from all the student chapters in Argentina were in attendance, with some travelling very long distances. Melissa Schultea, SPE Young Member Programs Manager (London office) visited the chapter and attended this event as well. Suez Canal University Student Chapter hosts field trip

suez-100x752Suez Canal University Student Chapter organized a field trip to Suez Oil Production and Refining Company on 27 November. The field trip began with a meeting with the vice manager of the company where he explained the different component and units of the company. He explained the path of crude oil during refining and production process starting with desalters to reduce the salinity of the input crude oil, then oil enters the distillation tower in which separation of different component of oil occurs. University of Oklahoma Chapter hosts SPE Distinguished Lecturer

Some 50+ members of the University of Oklahoma SPE Student Chapter recently hosted 2003-2004 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Neal Nagel, who, “gave an exciting and informative presentation including aspects of rock mechanics, stresses around the wellbore, and well planning. Dr. Nagel showed simulations of rock stress and failure using a geomechanics simulation called FLAC3D. The main thing OU SPE was able to take away from this presentation was a greater appreciation and understanding of a problem that could potentially cost a company a lot of money,” according to Chapter Secretary Kyle Ray. Also on the agenda of the November meeting was discussion of the chapter’s outreach programs: Adopt-a-Child and the Sooner Elementary Engineering and Science Clubs.

Universidad de Cuyo Chapter has active year

Members of the Universidad de Cuyo SPE Student Chapter have had an active year, according to their website. Since April, members have attended two technical meetings, hosted a barbeque, and participated in a program to promote petroleum engineering as a curriculum choice for entering freshmen.
