Maritime Academy hosts E-program for school children

Isaac Opoku, president of the SPE Reginal Maritime Academy Student Chapter, put on an environmental program for children in the DA school in Prampram, Ghana. Opoku identified various energy sources, how some contribute to global warming, and how children can work to conserve resources and protect the environment. The program is part of the chapter’s on-going outreach efforts.


University of Dundee takes a field trip to Scotland

The University of Dundee Student Chapter took 17 students of the SPE CEPMLP on a field trip to ExoonMobil Chemical Plant at Mosmorran, Fife, Scotland on 14 May. The students were enthusiastic about this much anticipated trip. At ExxonMobil, the group was met by a team of staff who gave them a screen presentation of the history of ExoonMobil, Mosmorran and the workings of the industry. They then took a drive around all of the facilities and the power control room.


STAR Program selections for 2008 announced

All selections have been made for the STAR Program for 2008, and arrangements are in progress.

The STAR Program sponsors students to attend ATCE at no cost. This is not a program that can be applied for. The SPE International Board of Directors identifies specific universities, and one student from each of those universities is chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Student chapter officer
  • In his/her 3rd year of university
  • If more than one person fits the above criteria, the person with the highest grade point average is selected

King Saud Chapter has busy month

Members of the King Saud University SPE Student Chapter attended the First Saudi Innovation Exhibition focusing on innovations related to exploration and production. The student chapter members also organized a 6 day SPE recruiting campaign, which brought the chapter’s membership to more than 600. Trips during the month included a visit to the Disabled Children’s Association and a field trip to a natural gas distribution company.

SPE Malaysia Student Chapter Conference 2008 to be in June

SPE-UTP-SC will be organizing the Society of Petroleum Engineers Malaysia Student Chapter Conference 2008 (SPEMSCC 08) with a theme of “Empowering Future Young Professionals.” The main objective is to provide an opportunity for the graduating students to engage in discussions about the future directions for young professionals in the oil and gas industry.
