Joicelene Lucas

Joicelene Lucas is a full-time graduate student at the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton Canada. She was born in Malanje, Angola where she only attained up to high school level and decided to pursue her studies abroad, after being awarded a scholarship from Sonangol EP for a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alberta. During her studies, she had the opportunity to work as a marker for the Faculty of Engineering in an Engineering Mechanics class, and she also accumulated several hours of voluntary work inside and outside of the university community.

Joicelene has been recognized for Excellence as a Lifelong Learner by the Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta and has received several scholarship awards based on her academic standing at the same University. She has always been praised as a diligent and focused individual, and this led to her deciding to pursue the degree in MSc. in Petroleum Engineering to further her studies in the area. Her research involves the investigation of the use of hydrophobically associating polymers and hydrolyzed polyacrylamide for EOR, using micromodels to visualize the flow of the fluids. She is currently conducting her research in the Enhanced Oil Recovery and Reservoir Simulation Laboratory of the University of Alberta.

She is a language enthusiast, currently speaks Portuguese and English fluently and is working towards fluency in Spanish as well and has plans to learn more languages. Upon completion of her studies, Joicelene wants to join the Oil and Gas industry and work in projects related to women in STEM to break stereotypes. She hopes to contribute to the development of her country and being a recipient of the Imomoh Scholarship through the Society of Petroleum Engineers will drive her to a more solid professional development and closer to her goal. She is thrilled to be one of the recipients and hopes to be able to give back to her community.
