Offshore use of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is in its infancy, but, with the adoption of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to decarbonize fossil-fueled power generation, there is a time-critical opportunity to add value to the CCS chain by adopting and maturing offshore CO2 EOR. The talk will include policy background, plans by utility companies, sources and sinks for CO2, the EOR opportunity, infrastructure requirements, logistics, and engineering challenges.

The 2014 SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands Oct. 27-29. Of special interest to me as R & D Committee Chairman was SPE’s first Research & Development Competition held on Monday, 27 October. The contest specifically encouraged researchers from the basic sciences and other engineering disciplines to address the 6 E & P Grand Challenges: (1) Higher Resolution Subsurface Imaging of Hydrocarbons; (2) Produced Water Management, (3) In-Situ Molecular Manipulation, (4) Increasing Recovery Factors from Oil and Gas Fields, (5) Carbon Capture, Storage and Sequestration; and (6) Minimized Environmental Impact. This year’s winners were as follows: (1) “Electrical Mitigation of Hydrocarbon Fouling for Reduced Chemical Inhibitor Utilization (Vaibhav Bahadur, The University of Texas, $30,000), (2) ” Stimuli-Responsive Supramolecular Assemblies as Displacement Fluids in EOR” (Mustafa Akbulut & Cenk Temizel, Texas A & M University, $20,000), and (3) “Multi-Wavelength Sized Finite Elements for Efficient Subsurface Imaging” (Omar Laghroughe, Hariot-Watt University, $10,000).
