September (March)

  • Download forms and membership applications.
  • Schedule a meeting of chapter officers, faculty sponsor, and section/chapter liaison to plan annual activities.
  • Hold a chapter organizational meeting with the faculty sponsor and the section/chapter liaison.

September - May (March - November)

  • Conduct regularly scheduled activities and meetings. Email us meeting report forms and special activities forms after each activity.
  • Conduct membership development activities.
  • Participate in student paper contests. Contact studentactivities@spe.org for information.

April (October)

  • Elect officers for the following year and report the new officers to SPE. If needed, select the faculty sponsor for the following year.
  • Elect section/chapter liaison and inform us of your choice.
  • Submit annual report, financial statement form and the support for technical development form by April 1.

Chapters make it easy for students to network with industry professionals, engage in technology discussions at SPE events, and learn more about the industry.

Keep your chapter active

Chapters can organize and participate in a variety of programs, from fields trips to workshops and forums. Send us a report to let us know of your latest activities and meetings. Your chapter's activities may be posted to our SPE Now blog.

Give and get recognition

Chapter of the Month

Each month, we recognize one chapter whose activities distinguish them from others in SPE. The winners are announced on our Now blog.

The Gold Standard Award and Outstanding Student Chapter Award

The Gold Standard Award is available to all student chapters that have accomplished an admirable level of activity. The Outstanding Student Chapter award recognizes exceptional merit. Submit your annual report by 1 April to be eligible for both.

SPE Student Chapter Past President’s Award

Recognize outstanding service by your student chapter president by nominating them for this award.

SPE Faculty Sponsor Recognition Certificate

Recognize outstanding commitment, dedication or enthusiasm by your Faculty Advisor by nominating them for this certificate.

Host a paper contest

Students can showcase their skills by participating in paper contests hosted by chapters. As the hosting chapter, you will nominate judges, provide moderators, invite students to participate in the contest and present prizes to the winners.

We will notify your chapter if it is selected to host a contest in your region. See upcoming student contests.

Get support for technical development

We provide a Support for Technical Development Program to assist chapters in attending various society-sponsored meetings. To obtain funds, submit your annual report by 1 April.

Manage your chapter

All chapters are required to send us an annual report by 1 April (or 1 November for chapters with a March through November academic year).

You can also let us know of any chapter and student changes, order supplies, and submit reports.
