BHP Billiton hopes to contract a drilling rig this year and spud two wells in Mexico’s deepwater Trion field in the second half of 2018. The Australian company won the rights to partner with state-owned Pemex and became project operator through a farm-out, with Pemex retaining a 40% interest. Trion, located in the Gulf of Mexico near the Shell-operated Great White field in United States waters, is estimated to hold prospective reserves of 485 million BOE. Steve Pastor, BHP operations president for petroleum, said the company is talking with several international and Mexican contractors about providing the drilling rig and expects to announce a winner before year-end.
