Operator and Investor Panel Session – ‘Navigating Change in Uncertain Times’ Grand Ballroom

Over the last few years, the challenges faced by the oil and gas industry have been wide-ranging and unprecedented. While the transition to a lower carbon environment, an increased focus on the application of digital technology and the future composition of its workforce will be recurring themes that define the industry both in the Caspian region and globally for years to come, the uncertainty caused by more recent events is having a more immediate impact. COVID-19 has precipitated fundamental changes in working practices and in the use of technology. Moreover, as the industry has emerged from the pandemic, it has seen demand increase while recent geopolitical tensions have continued to exacerbate price volatility and place energy security firmly on the agenda. With rising global demand, highly volatile prices and net zero ambitions, the oil and gas industry faces major challenges in reducing costs, optimising the performance of its assets, improving its environmental footprint and avoiding future skills shortages. Assessing current challenges and identifying how to navigate this period of rapid and extensive change will be a vital conversation for investors, operators, service companies and government entities across the Caspian region.

The shared challenge of climate change requires governments, industries and society to come together and the Caspian is no exception. Most stakeholders in the region have stated their individual plans to tackle the energy transition at a corporate level and governments across the region are increasingly vocal on implementing policy changes needed to meet pledges on carbon reduction.

What do net zero ambitions mean for the oil and gas industry and how can it adapt to the challenge of becoming more sustainable through the energy transition?

This panel will examine how energy-efficient development concepts can be deployed and what conditions would have to be in place for this to be economically viable in the Caspian.

Driven by the need to improve efficiency and deliver sustained value, innovations in digital technology are revolutionising how the oil and gas industry operates. Advancements in recent years have been far-reaching particularly within the fields of autonomous systems, data science and artificial intelligence. In parallel with these developments, an understanding of the people behind the technologies and their ability to adapt to changing working practices, new skills and mind-sets is required.

What strategies should organisations in the oil and gas industry adopt to make a success of their digital journey? Current and future applications of digital technology and how they can generate tangible benefits for our industry will be discussed by the panel.

Topic One - Human Performance

We work in complex businesses with many moving parts and risk sets so it is very important for everyone to understand how individual actions can influence decisions made and therefore safety performance in the workplace. Human performance is the way people, culture, equipment, work systems and processes all interact to lead to given outcomes. In this session we will hear how the acknowledgement by organizations that as human beings we all make mistakes and that the willingness to have an open mind and to listen and share with each other in order to learn is key to ensuring that incidents do not occur in the future.

Topic Two - Decarbonisation

Ongoing debates around energy sustainability and the need to fulfill the energy needs of today whilst building the energy systems of tomorrow are currently keeping top Executives and the Boards of many of the world’s largest energy companies occupied. Developing strategies that will drive the required energy transition and dramatically reduce an organization’s carbon footprint is taxing the greatest minds. The world needs to meet overall global carbon reduction targets in pressing timeframes so that atmospheric temperatures are kept in check so avoiding catastrophic climate change. This challenge is one of the toughest ever taken on by man. We will hear how energy companies are rising to this challenge with expert panel members / speakers detailing efforts being made by their own organizations.

The oil and gas industry is experiencing profound change in its demographic structure. With an ageing workforce and the prospect of future skill shortages – particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital - a real possibility, the need to attract and retain new talent has never been more vital. Perceptions of the industry as a long-term career option among the younger generation are changing in the wake of concerns over climate change and job stability while the need for the industry to adapt the work environment to their expectations poses challenges.

Developing local talent within the Caspian region is an important part of this equation. How can the underlying challenges for attracting new talent be addressed, how can younger professionals be supported to remain in the industry and what further changes will need to be made to harness their full potential?
