International awards recognize individuals who make significant technical and professional contributions to the petroleum engineering profession and to the worldwide oil and gas industry.
- International nominations will remain active for three years. Please do not submit a new nomination each year.
- International nominations require a minimum of one letter of support, maximum of six, to be uploaded by individual contributors.
- International nominations require candidates to upload their CV/Resume or LinkedIn profile.
- International awards are presented annually at ATCE.
NOTE: Effective immediately, the regional and international awards programs will no longer be tied together. Beginning with the 2026 awards season, regional award winners will no longer be eligible to be moved to the international level of competition. If a regional nominator wishes for their winning regional candidate to be considered at the international level, they must submit a new international nomination.

The Public Service Award recognizes distinguished service to a country, state, community, or the public, with consideration given to local customs and differing cultural perspectives of public service.
This recognition is granted for excellence in:
- Leadership
- Service
- Humanitarianism
Eligible contributions must demonstrate meaningful impact beyond the requirements of the nominee’s professional responsibilities and beyond service to SPE.
Examples of eligible activities include leadership, promotion, or participation in initiatives such as:
- Environmental stewardship and restoration (particularly in areas near oil industry activities)
- Education and employment support
- Volunteer service (e.g., hospitals, schools, child, or women’s welfare organizations)
- Humanitarian efforts and human rights initiatives
- Diversity and inclusion efforts
- Fundraising and charitable campaigns
- Reforestation activities
- Public campaigns and community organizations
- Other efforts that directly improve a country, state, or community
Giovanni Paccaloni Young Professional Service Award
The Giovanni Paccaloni Young Professional Service Award of the Society of Petroleum Engineers recognizes members in good standing and under the age of 36 for both:
- Excellence and leadership in service to the public and the community, in accordance with local customs.
- Service to the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the profession of petroleum engineering, or the petroleum industry.
Both above criteria are considered during the judging process for this award; however, they are weighted differently: service to the public and the community is given greater importance, accounting for 60% of the evaluation, whereas service to the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the profession of petroleum engineering, or the petroleum industry accounts for 40%.
While SPE-sponsored public or community services will be considered when evaluating candidates for this award, paid public or community services will not.
NOTE: An additional 'service' award, the SPE DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal, can be found beneath the 'Major Awards' accordion.
