From Young Professional to Industry Influencer: Gabrijel Grubac's Impact on Energy and SPE

Gabrijel Grubac has been a dynamic and dedicated member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) for the past six years. In his role as the Membership Chair of the SPE Romanian Section and as a Senior Completions Manager at Blade Energy Partners, he channels his expertise into the realm of geothermal energy, while also maintaining a strong foothold in the oil and gas sectors. Gabrijel's commitment to advancing the energy industry through a variety of SPE initiatives makes him a true catalyst for innovation and progress.
Gabrijel's journey with SPE began with a pivotal moment at the Beyond the Borders event in Romania in 2019. "I immediately felt ‘that’ feeling," he recalls, "that when driven by real passion, a group of people can achieve so much." This event marked the start of his deep involvement with the Young Professionals Committee (YPC), where he has supported numerous projects. A highlight of his work includes showcasing the potential of geothermal energy at the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE). By bridging the knowledge gap between young professionals in oil and gas and the emerging field of geothermal energy, Gabrijel is helping to pave the way for a more sustainable future.

As a moderator for SPE Tech Days, Gabrijel plays a crucial role in shaping the technical program and facilitating engagement among participants. Over the past three years, this flagship event of the Romanian Section has attracted more than 400 participants, creating a vibrant platform for technical and professional exchange. "Being the moderator gives me an opportunity to build the technical program and connect industry leaders with students and young professionals," he explains. This role not only enhances his professional development but also strengthens his network within the industry.
Gabrijel's passion for mentoring has led to lasting friendships and meaningful career guidance for many young professionals. "Mentoring has been an opportunity for me to share my insights, failures, and ideas with those embarking on their new energy careers," he says. His involvement in the SPE mentoring program has been fulfilling, providing a platform for weekly discussions, programming classes, and more informal, yet impactful, interactions.

His participation in the Energy Hackathon, specifically the SPE Europe EnergyGeohackathon, combines his interests in geothermal energy, data science, and education. As part of the organizing team, Gabrijel has supported the development of hackathon challenges and led bootcamp sessions to prepare participants. "The hackathon and the team organizing it have been nothing short of a great example of what a group of people can achieve even if they are geographically scattered," he reflects.
In 2023, Gabrijel was honored as a TWA Energy Influencer, a recognition given to young professionals who have made significant contributions to the industry. "Being chosen as one of the few in the 2023 round was unexpected and encouraging to know that the ripples of engagement can be felt in different places," he notes. This accolade underscores his dedication to the energy sector and the impact of his engagement within SPE. Gabrijel was also awarded the SPE Giovanni Paccaloni Young Professional Service Award in 2023.
"I keep learning everyday. And it feels natural and real. A huge chunk of that is because of SPE."
Gabrijel credits his involvement with SPE for much of his professional growth. "The expansion of my professional network through SPE has allowed me to meet people from different domains and continuously improve myself," he shares. “I keep learning everyday. He emphasizes the vast opportunities within the industry and the importance of adapting to changes, such as the integration of data science and new energy sources. His passion for geothermal energy and belief in its future potential is a testament to his forward-thinking approach.
