History of the PetroBowl® Program
The PetroBowl® competition was founded in 2002 and was created, organized, and administered by the SPE Gulf Coast Section. Its popularity grew and, in 2013, regional pilots took place, so it became a truly global event and part of SPE International.
The program continued to grow in popularity, with six regional qualifiers recognized. As more teams participated, the International Championship became too challenging for many qualifying teams to participate. In 2025, the decision was made to focus solely on regional contests.
