Permanent Plug and Abandonment of Wells - A Roadmap for Engineers

Disciplines: Drilling

Course Description

This training course will start to cover the P&A topic by reviewing different guidelines, definitions of terms, and well abandonment phases and challenges. In the next step, two different approaches (conventional and risk-based) for permanently abandoning wells will be discussed. As well types and well conditions play important role in P&A, platform, subsea, and land wells will be discussed. Well completion consideration including types of XMT and wellhead, and production tubing sizes will be discussed. Establishment of cross sectional barrier by using formation as barrier, section milling or PWC technology will be reviewed including their challenges and opportunities. As working unit (rigs, vessels, etc.) selection influences cost of P&A operation, they will be reviewed during the course. Finally, the course will be wrapped up by considering the P&A during well construction.
