Basics of Artificial Lift Systems


Disciplines: Production and Operations

Course Description

This course presents a complete overview of the most widely used artificial lift systems in the oil and gas industry. A unified engineering concept of artificial lift is presented based on Nodal System analysis approach. The differences amongst the various artificial lift systems and their applications are clearly presented. This interactive seminar type presentation blends lectures with some simple hands on problem solving workshops with adequate Q&A sessions. Detailed design, troubleshooting, evaluation, economic analysis and maintenance of the artificial lift systems will not be covered.

Topics:
 
  • Brief overview of production systems analysis
    • Definition of a well or production system
    • Overview of artificial lift system in wells
  • Introduction to the following artificial lift systems:
    • Plunger lift
    • Gas lift – Continuous and intermittent
    • Electrical submersible pumps or ESP’s
    • Rod or beam pumps
    • Progressive cavity pumps or PCP’s
  • Special applications:
    • Application for dewatering of coalbed methane or CBM wells
    • Unloading of gas wells
    • Temporary installations to initiate well production after completion
  • Comparison of major artificial lift systems – Internet based video presentations
  • Criteria for selection or screening criteria
  • Workshops: Problem solving – with simple Q&A sessions

Who Attends

This course is for any petroleum or non-petroleum engineers or operators, field technicians, reservoir engineers, geologists, geophysicists, managers, accountants or human resource professionals interested in the subject for exposure and understanding of its’ place in the management of well performance in the oil and gas fields.

Special Requirements

Attendees should have a full understanding of the basics of the artificial lift systems discussed.

Instructor

Hemanta Mukherjee is the principal consultant and president of iPoint LLC, an independent consulting company based in Westminster, Colorado. He has more than 40 years of experience in production and reservoir engineering. Mukherjee retired from Schlumberger Oilfield Services in January 2005, after serving in four product lines and working in many regions of the world. He is also a visiting professor of production engineering for the Imperial College, London, where he teaches a master’s level class in petroleum engineering every year. Mukherjee has written numerous technical papers. He was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer in 1996–1997 and received the SPE Production Engineering Award in 2000. He has been an SPE Distinguished Member since 2004 and has served on many SPE committees. Mukherjee holds a BS in petroleum engineering from the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad, India, and MS and PhD degrees in petroleum engineering from The University of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
