Delivering Effective Well Intervention Operations
Disciplines: Completions | Drilling | Production and Operations | Projects, Facilities, and Construction
Course Description
The course will improve the participants ability to identify and address performance limits related to barrier strategy, well control practices, and pressure control equipment during specific operations. An interactive approach will be used to facilitate participation and the new suite of API well intervention documents as well as wireline and coil tubing Recommended Practices will be highlighted.
Course Objectives:
- Address common subsea intervention industry questions such as:
- Barrier requirements
- Roles & Responsibilities of the teams
- Pressure Control devices vs. Barrier elements - Is it fit-for-purpose?
- Equipment testing
- Improve your understating of hardware and control optimization
- Address questions from the participants
Topics:
- Barrier requirements for well intervention operations
- Common questions & misconceptions about equipment used as barriers vs. pressure control
- Riser vs. Riserless operational risk discussions
- Roles and Responsibilities for wireline and coil tubing Operational crews

Instructors
Brian Skeels is a Senior Technical Advisor and Technology Fellow with TechnipFMC. He has 43 years of experience in subsea completion hardware design, installation, intervention, and pipeline design. This experience includes:
- 5 years with Exxon Production Research Company working on Exxon’s famous SPS and UMC subsea systems.
- 38 years with TechnipFMC. As a TechnipFMC Senior Technical Advisor, he serves as a technical advocate for new technologies and strategic planning specialist for frontier technologies, HPHT, and remote well intervention, including efforts delving into subsea systems engineering and field architecture, riser and riser-less well intervention, ROV interfaces, remote robotics technology, hydrate remediation, and well plug and abandonment programs.
- 38 years of involvement in API’s Upstream Standards. Brian currently serves on API Subcommittee 17 executive committee. He served as a task group chair for 17G on subsea intervention systems and 17D on subsea tree and wellhead equipment, and 17TR8 for HPHT equipment design.
- Serving on several Industry and professional society conference program boards.
Brian’s registrations and honors include:
- Professional Engineer – State of Texas
- Adjunct Professor – Subsea Engineering at University of Houston
- ASME Fellow, TechnipFMC Technology Fellow
- ASME Titanium Crawfish Award – for technology excellence in the oil industry
- SPE Gulf Coast Section Projects, Facilities and Construction Award
- OTC Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals
- ASME Gecoa Oil Drop Award – for distinguished and meritorious achievement and service in the field of petroleum mechanical engineering
Ray Stawaisz brings over 40 years of drilling, completion and well intervention experience to the course. He is the current chairman of API 17G1 and supports various other API and task groups.
Brian Saucier – DeepMar Consulting
Brian Saucier is an independent consultant with over 30 years of experience in all phases of subsea systems design, installation, and life-of-field intervention operations. He has provided a range of consulting services to major E&P companies, offering both technical and operational solutions across various project roles. As a member of ASME, Brian has also contributed to the field of subsea engineering since 1992 by authoring and co-authoring several industry papers and holds several industry patents.
James McAllister is a seasoned professional in the oil and gas sector, bringing 24 years of expertise in subsea operations, engineering, and project manager of subsea interventions. He launched his career as an ROV Pilot/Technician and subsequently advanced into operational and engineering roles focused on riser based and riserless wireline, stimulation, and hydrate remediation projects globally. Most recently, James retired from Shell, where he served as Senior Lead Intervention Engineer, Subject Matter Expert, and CWI Technical Authority. He currently serves as Co-Chair of API RP17WL and is a former section lead of API 17G2.
James has been a pilot for 42 years and recently obtained a sea plane rating in Alaska. He still enjoys flying, skydiving, motorcycles, and scuba diving.
