Course Description
Type curves used in the forecasting of reserves and production is not a new phenomenon in the oil and gas industry; however, it has become a critical tool in the reservoir engineer’s tool kit because of the development of shale oil and gas plays and the re-development of traditional plays through horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracing. This two-day seminar is an introduction to the science behind type curves and their evolving use in today’s oil and gas industry.
Topics Include:
- Probabilistic reserves determination
- Why and when type curves should be used
- The theory behind multi-segment curves
- How multi-segment curves are generated
- Resource and reserves definitions appropriate to plays evaluated by type curves

Why Attend
This 2 day course will focus on the Alberta Cardium oil play and the BC Montney gas play, plus other tight light oil pays, and will provide insights into how type curves should best be created and applied. You will also identify some of the challenges behind understanding the production story and reserves assignments derived from type curves.
Who Attends
This course is designed for engineering and geoscience professionals who may currently, or in the future, be involved in oil & gas plays where type curves are primarily used to determine future production and reserves. The first day of the seminar will focus on the technical presentation through a lecture format. The second day of the seminar will be dedicated to working through a number of workshop problems utilizing Aucerna’s ValNav software.
Special Requirements
Attendees may have to bring a laptop on the second day.
CEUs
Upon completion atendees will recieve 1.6 Continuing Education Units.

Instructor
Art McMullen is regional director for the Asia Pacific region at Sproule. He has over 35 years of technical and management experience in the oil and gas business, including extensive knowledge in many areas of coalbed methane, and both conventional and unconventional oil and gas. Art specializes in reporting on petroleum assets to standards required by securities exchanges around the globe and instructs courses on the topic. He also provides advisory services on mergers, acquisitions, and disposition. Art has project experience in Canada, Australia, Indonesia and the United States and is responsible for expanding Sproule’s services in Asia Pacific today.
