Drillstring Design and Failure Prevention for Improved Drilling Efficiency

Disciplines: Completions | Drilling

Course Description

The course will address the drill string components’ features, functions, pipe identifications, failure mechanisms and drilling practices required to prevent/reduce non-productive times associated with string failures. The course will cover two common string failure mechanisms (overload and fatigue failures), causes of the failures, and how to prevent these failures to happen. The drilling assembly selection and design to reduce the failure will be also discussed. “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure;” this saying is very relevant to string failure prevention, which means it is easier to take small steps to prevent string failure from happening than dealing with the problem & its consequences once it is established.

Wash out / twist off problem is one of the common drilling problems related to drill string fatigue failures. The drilling practices related to identifying washout, taking the right decision on time and tripping out of hole before the string twist-off will also be addressed during the session. By the end of the session participants will be able to refresh their knowledge about drill string components and features (e.g. BSR, SRF), design methods, failure mechanisms, BHA selection to reduce fatigue failures, and improve drilling efficiency.

Why Attend

Topics Covered:

  • Introduction – Pre-course assessment - Mechanics of the drillstring – Buoyancy and axial force – The root of all problems.
  • Drill Pipe (DP): Specifications and functions – DP classification, weights, strength and tensile capacity. Tool joint (TJ) dimensions, torsional strength and makeup torque – DP classification – DP marking.
  • BHA (HWDP, DC, Stabilizer): HWDP functions, specifications and properties – DC functions, specification and properties – DC connection bending strength ratio (BSR) –– DC stress relief features – Stiff-to-Limer pipe transition stiffness ratio. Stabilizers, stabilization principles and formation dip. Exercises.
  • Drill String Design: Design process – Design factors & assumptions – Selection of BHA type & DC length – String design and failure prevention – Overload design & MOP – Working load and length of DP – DP Burst and Collapse pressures - Combined loading for DP and TJ – Slip crushing – Dope friction factor – Fatigue prevention design – Washout – Twist-off – Drilling practices – Exercise.

Who Attends

From the operating company: drilling engineers, senior drilling engineers, drilling superintendent, drilling supervisors, drilling fluid specialist.

From the rig contractor and service providers: drilling superintendents, tool pushers, tour pushers, drillers, assistant drillers, mud engineers, mud loggers, directional drillers and any drilling personnel who wants to improve/refresh his knowledge and understanding in this technical area.

Including the rig site crew with the operator’s team in these technical training courses provides significant results and maximum benefit to the drilling and completion operation.

Special Requirements

Participants should have basic skills in both drilling engineering and math. Participants must have a scientific calculator for use in the session.

CEUs

0.8 CEUs are awarded for this 1-day course.

Instructor

None Youssef Sallam, Well Engineering Instructor, Assessor and Facilitator, has more than 30 years in the Oil and Gas Industry, including engineering and operational experience with both operators and service companies in Middle East and Far East regions. He has a strong background in drilling engineering, drilling operations, deepwater and HPHT wells delivery. Youssef has the opportunity to drill a wide range of wells varying from HPHT deepwater wells using Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) system, extended reach wells in mature fields, to onshore low-cost and low-risk wells. He also provided Drilling Engineering competency assessment and training to oil and gas companies and support teaching the Petroleum Master Program in the American University in Cairo (AUC). He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Faculty of Engineering, University of Cairo. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
