Field Piloting for EOR/IOR Schemes

Disciplines: Reservoir

Course Description

Since Enhanced/ Improved Oil Recovery (EOR/ IOR) schemes in a given reservoir involve significant financial risks due to various uncertainties, it is prudent to ‘pilot’ them in a small, representative portion of the property. If determined to be technically and financially viable, the scheme could be subsequently expanded to a commercial size operation. Besides reducing uncertainties, pilots provide an opportunity to unravel/ resolve many potential issues. Therefore, specific objectives drive the nature of pilots and interpretation strategies. These in turn determine requirements for facilities, and operating guidelines including specific surveillance and monitoring plans. This workshop will provide participants an opportunity to review and learn various strategies for piloting Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).

The instructor intends to present this course before the SPE meetings around the world, wherever there is an interest in developing field pilots for enhanced oil recovery. In teaching this course, the instructor plans to: (1) spend most of the time discussing the practical aspects of EOR pilots, and keep discussion of the theoretical topics to bare minimum, (2) discuss economics of EOR pilots, and (3) provide each course attendee a workbook containing copies of the instructors’ PowerPoint presentations, and solutions to the class problems.

Instructor

Ashok K. Singhal, an expert in EOR technologies and horizontal well applications, is a principal consultant with Premier Reservoir Engineering Services, where he provides consulting and training in EOR. He has more than 35 years of worldwide oil and gas experience in heavy oil and tar sand reservoir engineering, horizontal well technology, CO2 flooding, thermal EOR, and waterflood projects. He has lectured on EOR, horizontal well applications, and other topics around the world.

Singhal is an engineering alumnus of Indian School of Mines and the University of Alberta, Edmonton. He earned his PhD in petroleum engineering from the University of California and later taught chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology and petroleum engineering at the University of Alberta.
