Horizontal Well Completions

Disciplines: Completions

Course Description

This course develops strategies for completing horizontal wells. It covers both cased-hole and open-hole configurations, either with or without sand control. Participants will learn the applications and dynamics of horizontal wells, including drill-in fluids, hole displacement, cementing, perforating, and stimulation. They will also learn the guidelines for selecting stand-alone screens and executing horizontal gravel packs.

Topics:

  • Completion options
  • Cased-hole horizontal completions
  • Perforating and stimulating horizontal wells
  • Open-hole horizontal completions
  • Drill-in fluids
  • Zonal isolation and inflow control
  • Displacing the drill-in fluid

Why Attend

Horizontal drilling was a step-change in the industry, but the technology is more expensive and riskier than drilling vertical or deviated wells. As a drilling, completion or reservoir engineer, it is important for you to understand the many challenges and options of horizontal drilling.

Who Attends

This course is designed for drilling, completion and reservoir engineers, and for service company personnel involved with planning, drilling, completing and operating horizontal wells.

Instructors

W. Aaron Burton’s career has been focused on the completion of shales and similar unconventional plays that require multistage hydraulic fracturing. In 2015, Burton started Unconventional Oil and Gas Training, a company specializing in training and consulting for unconventional multistage completions. Prior to starting the company, he was with Baker Hughes for nearly 8 years. During his tenure in operations he held the roles of field engineer, operations coordinator, and application engineer. Outside of operations he has been Product Line Strategist, Completions Manager for the Unconventional Resource Team, and Product Line Manager for unconventional multistage completions. He has completed wells, conducted training, and consulted on a variety of projects worldwide. Through his experience, he has developed a solid understanding of reservoir properties and stimulation design that are used in a data-driven approach to more effectively design completions in unconventional wells.

He is active in the industry authoring and instructing on the subject of unconventional completions. He has authored and coauthored three SPE papers, and continues to teach two SPE continuing education courses. He has written a variety of other documents including magazine articles and newsletters, and taught numerous classes in many different venues to operators, service companies, and other companies involved in the industry. Also, he has been a discussion leader, presenter, panelist, and participated in many other roles in industry events.

Burton holds a BS in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University

Dr. Sudiptya “Sid” Banerjee is the Propel SSP Product Champion at Fairmont Santrol, a role in which he helps address technical concerns with proppant transport, expand industry understanding of the technology, and help shape the development of next-generation proppant systems. Though recently removed from academia, Sudiptya previously worked at the Baker Hughes Center of Technology Innovation where he created and launched new completion tools for sand control, flow control, and enhanced oil recovery. Prior to that, Sudiptya had an operational focus with Schlumberger Well Services, overseeing cementing and fracturing operations in locales varying from Western Oklahoma to Saudi Arabia.

Sudiptya first obtained his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, followed by a M.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and finally a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University. He holds a number of patents related to completions tools, and is a frequent speaker at a number of technical workshops. Sid is currently the instructor for the SPE abbreviated course entitled “Introduction to Horizontal Completions.
