Introduction to Sand Control

Course Description

This course discusses the fundamental sand control considerations involved in completing a well and introduces the various sand control techniques commonly used across the industry, including standalone screens, gravel packs, high rate water packs and frac-packs. It requires only a basic understanding of oilfield operations and is intended for drilling, completion and production personnel with some sand control experience who are looking to gain a better understanding of each technique’s advantages, limitations and application window for use in their upcoming completions.

Participants will gain a good understanding of:

  • Fundamental sand control concepts, including when and why it is necessary
  • The various sand control techniques used across the industry, including their advantages and limitations
  • Completion selection criteria and application windows for use on their own upcoming completions
  • The basics of sand control design, installation and evaluation.

Who Attends

This course is targeted at drilling, completion and production personnel with some sand control experience who are looking to gain a better understanding of sand control completions and operations. Job titles may include:

  • Completions engineer
  • Drilling engineer
  • Field engineer/specialist/technician
  • Product development engineer
  • Production engineer
  • Research engineer

Special Requirements

A laptop and calculator are required for use with certain exercises during the course.

CEUs

0.8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) will be awarded for this 1-day course.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be received no later than 14 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after the 14-day window will not be refunded. Refunds will not be given due to no show situations.

Instructor

Ian Tchacos Philip Wassouf is the Managing Director of DuneFront which he founded to simplify and strengthen conventional sand control methodology. Prior to founding DuneFront, he worked for Schlumberger in a number of positions, including field engineering roles in both completions and pumping services, before taking on the role of Product Champion at its sand control headquarters in Houston, where he worked on a variety of new technology projects including downhole tools, screens and software. As such, he was heavily involved in supporting worldwide sand control operations while also training both young and experienced engineers. He now works internationally on the design and evaluation of sand control completions for a variety of clients and has authored a number of technical papers, presentations and patents relating to completions and sand control. He is an active member of SPE and received a Masters in Mechanical Engineering (MEng) from Imperial College London.
