Course Description

This training course will provide a high level overview of how to perform subsea well abandonments. It will take the learner step by step through the regulations and guidelines and different subsea well tree configurations. Review vessels and riser systems available to safely conduct subsea well abandonment operations. Discuss lower and upper wellbore abandonment best practices, different deployment methods and downhole tool selections.

Bart Joppe is the Director Integrated Well Abandonment for Baker Hughes in Houston. He is responsible for technical, commercial and operational support for the company’s well abandonment services. In his 19 years with Baker Hughes Mr. Joppe has performed operational, technical sales and business development roles in Europe, the USA and the Middle East. His technical expertise includes fishing and milling services, through-tubing intervention and wellbore isolation. He has served as a project manager for new technology development and as an instructor for Baker Hughes and the Society of Petroleum Engineers well abandonment training programs.

Mr. Joppe graduated from the Institute for Petroleum and Gas Technology “Noorder Haaks” in Den Helder, The Netherlands and holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Drilling and Production Technology. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Darin Hilton currently serves as commercial manager for well ops US and has worked for Helix Energy Solutions Group for over 5 years.  He has over 18 years of experience in the offshore industry.  Hilton earned his BS in nautical science with a minor in marine engineering from Maine Maritime Academy.  He holds a USCG Master Unlimited Tonnage license with OIM unrestricted endorsement. 

Hilton began his career in the shipping industry at Marine Transport Lines were he was exposed to multi product tanker and chemical tanker operations.  He then worked in the drilling industry with Diamond Offshore and served in positions from entry level to OIM as well as many other leadership positions.  He has also worked in the production industry with BP and served in leadership positions of marine supervisor  as well as superintendent for 3 producing fields during this time he helped managed the individual assets of Spars TLP’s and floating production semis with oil storage capabilities.  While at BP he also managed major projects for these fields as well as acted as client rep for some of these projects during execution phase.

Hilton served over 3 years as Master/OIM on the Q4000.  He was the Master/OIM on the Q4000 during the oil spill response at Macondo and worked closely with BP operations during this time period.
