Understanding Well Integrity Over the Operate Phase of the Well Life Cycle

Disciplines: Reservoir

Course Description

Over the course, attendees will have the opportunity to participate and understand the important role they play in the well life cycle and how early interaction and collaboration impacts operations, economics, risk, safety and ultimately abandonment.

Delegates will leave with a better understanding of how important sharing information about a well's construction and operation can be, and how critical it is to document how the well operates and particularly any characteristics that are shown when the well is operating out of character.

Topics:

  • Introduction to well integrity
  • Guidelines and standards
  • Material selection
  • Lets’ construct a well
  • Annular pressure management
  • Rogues gallery
  • Global reliability
  • Risk assessment
  • Dispensations
  • Abandonment
  • Competency

Why Attend

Attendees do not require any tools for this course but a basic understanding of how a well is constructed and then operates as a producer or injector is very beneficial. This highly visual and interactive training welcomes delegate participation and questions.

Delegates will leave with a better understanding of how important sharing information about a wells construction and operation can be, and how critical it is to document how the well operates and particularly any characteristics that are shown when the well is operating out of character.
All persons will be given a PDF copy of all slides.

Who Attends

This course is targeted at a wide range of oilfield professionals; drillers, completion engineers, petroleum engineers and production engineers. They all play an integral part of the well lifecycle but often aren’t aware of the impact of decisions made in the design phase and construct phase on later field life and abandonment.

Over the course, attendees will have the opportunity to participate and understand the important role they play in the well life cycle and how early interaction and collaboration impacts operations, economics, risk, safety and ultimately abandonment.

Simon Sparke began his career in the Middle East in 1978. Over 40 years, he gained field experience in Central and Southern America, UK onshore, North Sea, Australasia, Canada, Russian Arctic, West Siberia, Central Asia and West Africa. He has supervised, designed and planned a wide range of field operations including well testing, completions, workovers and much more. He has also worked for financial institutions and government regulators providing advice and guidance on investments and well status.

In 2005, after earning an MBA from the University of Portsmouth, he joined Tullow Oil as the global head of well integrity managing an increasing and international well stock of on and offshore wells. In this capacity he built a world class well integrity management system that brought together data sets from well construction, operations, and production to produce a management reporting system that tracked more than 1,000 wells (SPE-142449-MS). While working for Tullow Oil, Simon collaborated with 14 colleagues to coauthor ISO-16530 Well Integrity - Life Cycle Governance. He began giving well integrity courses to a wide range of institutions in 2013. In 2015, he built another well integrity management system for Lundin Petroleum in Oslo.

Simon has published 7 SPE papers to date.
