Well Integrity and Barrier Management – Managing Risks and Assuring Reliability

Course Description

Maintaining safe well operations and preventing loss of containment throughout a well’s life is of prime importance and is achieved through diligent maintenance, proper operation and verification of well barriers; i.e.; good well integrity. Planning for well integrity requires engineers to verify and validate the design for a well for the design loads and the environments that the well encounters throughout the well life-cycle.

This training module is designed to help understand the risks associated with load cases and operating environments to support proper well design. The training will cover well integrity from technical risk perspective during all phases of the life of the well toward delivering qualified and risk assessed well barriers for HPHT applications.

Salient features:

  • Identifying well integrity Risk Events with a step-wise application of Risk Assessment with examples of lower completions and production casing sub-system. Risk assessment tools include FMEA, HAZID and Bow-Tie Diagrams for assessing system, subsystem and component level risks.
  • Discussion on current well integrity standards and regulatory requirements;
  • Early implementation: How to exchange information between the Risk Assessment and other project documents like the basis of design (loads, well environments), functional requirements, and system engineering;
  • What is expected from the equipment Suppliers, the Drilling Contractor and the Operator in Verification and Validation of risk assessment results;
  • Risk Assessment as a dynamic model and a living document: How to track and integrate information on loads and strength reduction into the Risk Assessment for a HPHT well.

Attend this workshop to expand your knowledge of how to manage well design, construction, monitoring and surveillance towards managing well integrity throughout the life of a well. You will learn about how industry standards and guidelines relate to barrier construction, monitoring, and management. You will be equipped with the tools to safely and reliably construct and verify the integrity of a well.

The intended audience of this workshop are professionals/engineers who are involved in well planning, design, construction, drilling, completion, production, well intervention, quality assurance/quality control and safety, service-company engineers and equipment manufacturers.

CEUs

0.4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are awarded for this half-day course.

Instructor

Bibek Das is Partner and Technical Director with SafeQ Services. He holds BE in Production Engineering from DYPCET, India; MS in Environmental and Resource Management from BTU, Germany; and MS in Petroleum Engineering from University of Houston, Texas. He has chaired several FMEA, FMECA, HAZOP and HAZID studies. He has executed risk and reliability analysis involving a wide range of tools and techniques, including Quantitative Risk Analysis, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability studies, Production Assurance studies, Fault-Tree Analysis, Event-Tree Analysis, Reliability Centered Maintenance, and Safety Integrity Level determination and verification studies. He has developed Reliability Assurance and Integrity Management Guidance framework for Operators.

He has worked on Drilling & Completions risk, Well Integrity, new drilling technology assessment and published research papers of his work on the subjects. His notable works include Blowout Preventer Maintenance and Inspection in Deepwater Operations, a study sponsored by Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, after Presidential commission findings post Deepwater Horizon disaster. He has also evaluated Dual Gradient Drilling system highlighting key high-risk issues. He has worked on Risk Based Evaluation of Loads and Capacity of Equipment for HPHT Well Completions and Subsea Production System, and Subsea Overpressure Hazard Analysis for High Integrity Pressure Protection System for HPHT wells.

He has worked on casing degradation analysis - diagnostics and predictive data analytics, that has been the theme of his publications SPE 189604, 184417, 173055, 174815 and OTC 27603, 25766. In addition to authoring some 25 journal and conference papers, Bibek has also been a reviewer of original research works for Elsevier journals. He has served as Steering Committee Member at Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, Texas A&M College Station.
