Featured Member: Balnur Mindygaliyeva, Ph.D. Candidate, SPE Student Member since 2015
For Ph.D. candidate Balnur Mindygaliyeva, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has been more than just a professional organization—it’s been a vital partner in her academic and professional development. Over the course of her nine-year membership, Balnur has transformed from a passionate student into a confident leader, actively contributing to the energy industry while pursuing her research in geothermal energy at Colorado School of Mines. Her journey demonstrates how involvement in SPE student chapters and events can be a driving force in shaping a successful career.
"SPE has been a cornerstone throughout my Ph.D. journey," Balnur reflects. "The organization’s technical resources and research papers have sparked new ideas for my work, while events and conferences have allowed me to present my research and gain diverse perspectives." This synergy between academia and industry has been key to her growth, as she has successfully applied the knowledge from SPE resources to her own research, particularly in geothermal reservoir engineering.
Balnur’s leadership roles in the SPE Colorado School of Mines Student Chapter have given her the chance to develop critical skills outside the classroom. Serving as Vice President Internal and Professional Development Chair, she gained hands-on experience in project management, event coordination, and public speaking. "Being actively involved provided a platform to expand my technical skills and leadership experience," she explains. These experiences have not only enhanced her professional capabilities but also deepened her connection to the energy sector.
One of the most impactful aspects of her involvement with SPE has been her role in the North America Student Symposium (NASS), where she served as Committee Director in 2023 and on the Sponsorship & Exhibition Sub-Committee in 2024. "I was inspired to join the NASS committee to bridge the gap between students and industry," says Balnur. Through this platform, she helped facilitate meaningful interactions between students and industry professionals, giving her and her peers access to career-defining insights and opportunities.
Her experience with NASS and other SPE events has also helped her build a vast professional network, which she sees as a crucial benefit for students. "Meeting industry leaders, like Susan Howes, and inviting them to our student chapter events illustrates how SPE programs foster meaningful relationships," she shares. These connections have proven invaluable, not only for networking but also for gaining mentorship and career guidance.
SPE has been a catalyst for Balnur’s personal and professional growth. "My relationship with SPE feels like a true partnership," she notes. Her story highlights the power of active participation in student chapters and professional organizations like SPE, as they offer opportunities to lead, learn, and make an impact. As she continues to shape her path in geothermal and petroleum engineering, Balnur remains committed to cultivating the same environment of growth and support for future generations of energy professionals.
