Hitesh Mohan, Vice President at INTEK Inc., brings extensive experience and dedication to the energy sector. With strong affiliations to both the National Capital and Gulf Coast Sections of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), his active participation in SPE's technical sections, leadership roles, and notable contributions as a Distinguished Lecturer showcase his unwavering dedication to propelling the industry forward. Hitesh's professional journey underscores his significant role in shaping the future of energy through his involvement and leadership within SPE.
Hitesh's journey with SPE began in 1994, and he has since held various leadership roles, including Program Chair, Section Chair, Director, and Webmaster. Currently serving as a Section Director, he has been instrumental in maintaining a robust program, awarding scholarships, and strengthening the section during challenging times. In 2017, when the section faced a decline in engagement from young members, Hitesh led a successful revitalization effort, demonstrating his dedication and leadership skills.
"I advised the section on maintaining a regular program, involved in giving out scholarships and other awards. Leading the section through major transitions and revitalizing it back has been one of my proudest achievements," Hitesh reflects.
Hitesh's role as a Distinguished Lecturer has been particularly impactful. Inspired by the desire to give back to the community and educate others about the resiliency of petroleum infrastructure, especially in the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy, Hitesh took on the challenge of becoming a Distinguished Lecturer, highlighting the personal and professional growth that came with this role.
"It gave me more confidence in public speaking and communicating with professionals around the world. Professionally, people look up to you when you are in that position."
One of his most memorable moments as a Distinguished Lecturer occurred in Bahrain, where the Minister of Oil and Gas attended his lecture. The session, initially delayed, turned into an engaging one-hour Q&A, thanks to the Minister's presence. This experience underscored the global reach and significance of the Distinguished Lecturer program.
Hitesh's commitment to the industry extends to his volunteer work with the ATCE program committee. His experience in reviewing abstracts, organizing sessions, and collaborating with experts has been both challenging and rewarding.
"Organizing special sessions for ATCE 2023 was a highlight. It was challenging but ultimately rewarding, and I met various experts along the way," he shares.
In 2009, Hitesh received the SPE Regional Service Award, a testament to his significant contributions to the industry. The recognition came as a surprise, yet it affirmed his efforts and dedication.
"I was shocked when I received the award package while at work. It was an unexpected but gratifying acknowledgment of my contributions."
Hitesh was also recently awarded the 2024 SPE Regional Management Award, representing the Eastern North America Region, further solidifying his commitment to the industry's advancement.
Hitesh's insights into the industry and his role in educating others are crucial. He emphasizes the importance of educating the public about the vital role of petroleum beyond emissions and its integration into everyday life.
"We need to better educate the other side of the equation. Petroleum is not just about tailpipe emissions; it’s integral to our daily lives," he asserts.
During his time as a Distinguished Lecturer, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hitesh adapted by delivering lectures online, continuing to engage with professionals worldwide despite the challenges. His experiences have shaped his perspective on the industry's future and the importance of mentoring the next generation.
Hitesh is a strong advocate for others to participate in the Distinguished Lecturer program, citing the unequaled experience and rigorous selection process that prepares individuals for future roles.
"I always encourage others to become a lecturer. The experience is unmatched, and the SPE staff support you throughout the journey," he advises.
Hitesh Mohan's journey within SPE and the energy industry is a testament to his dedication, leadership, and commitment to education and innovation. His contributions as a Distinguished Lecturer, his involvement with the ATCE program committee, and his numerous leadership roles within SPE have left an indelible mark on the industry. As Hitesh continues to inspire and educate others, his enduring legacy within SPE and the broader energy sector will undoubtedly be remembered.
