2026 SPE Strategic Plan

The main values of SPE are providing our members with the latest advancements in all petroleum engineering technical disciplines and enabling professional development throughout their careers from university until retirement.  

This is achieved through the programs and services SPE offers to members as industry and technology evolve. That necessitates that the SPE Board of Directors updates our strategic plan as needed.  

The latest exercise to that effect occurred, and the plan was approved during the SPE Board meeting in October 2026. 

Qualitative and quantitative member feedback helped guide the Board's strategy. The revised mission provides greater clarity on SPE's future direction by specifically identifying adjacent subsurface fields where the Society will grow its technical engagement. 

The strategic goals, based on our tagline Solutions. People. Energy. are designed to guide SPE’s priorities and investment through 2030. The goals are:  

Goal 1 (Solutions)
Create more timely, relevant, accessible, and globally applicable technical content that responds to evolving industry and member needs. 

Goal 2 (People)
Expand professional growth and development opportunities for each career stage and support collaboration and belonging across the global SPE community. 

Goal 3 (Energy)
Strengthen SPE's long-term financial sustainability for continued investment in member value and industry impact. 

Over the next few months, the Board and senior leadership will meet to develop implementation plans and timelines as well as a communication plan to keep members, stakeholders, and staff informed of the progress.
