Rapid Evaluation of SAGD Projects Using Type Wells and Statistical Aggregation

This course provides an introduction to all aspects of evaluating an in situ asset; from Geology to Engineering to Uncertainty. Students will be presented with a simple yet robust method to evaluate and prepare a business case for an in situ acquisition and divestiture opportunity from the ground up.
The morning will focus on the basics of statistical aggregation and oil sands geology; including modern analogues discussion, facies recognition from core and well logs, net pay mapping and bitumen initially-in-place calculations.
The afternoon will focus on proper reserve and resource classification, type well creation, (including estimating recovery factors), steam oil ratios (SOR) and production profiles, and statistical aggregation methods. Groups will take practice these methods using several simple games.
Upon completion of this course, participants should have an understanding of:
- Estimating under uncertainty
- Basic statistics and aggregation principles
- Reservoir basics of the SAGD process
- Decline curve methods for SAGD
- Production type well curve generation
- Application of the above via case studies
To gain insights into the use of Statistical methods and the principles of aggregation in the development of Production Type Well curves for SAGD wells and Programs.
Engineers, Geologists or any Geoscientists interested in learning the basics of what goes into an in situ reserves and resource evaluation.
Anyone who is interested in introducing statistical aggregation methods into their in situ workflows.
Engineers who want to learn a bit about in situ geology or geologists who want to learn a bit about engineering. The geological and engineering concepts will be presented at a high level suitable for all.
Anyone with a finance background that wants some insight into what technical work goes into an in situ reserves evaluation.

Bill Spackman, P.Eng, GLJ Petroleum Consultants
Bill holds the position of Manager, Engineering at GLJ and has a wide breadth of experience including domestic and international reserve evaluations; conventional, unconventional and enhanced oil recovery. Bill is one of the leading experts in the evaluation reserves and resources for in-situ oil sands projects and has a concentrated focus on the evaluation of in-situ projects in Alberta and Saskatchewan’s oil sands; including the application of various technologies in multiple formations, both clastic and carbonate. In addition to evaluations work, Bill is responsible for overseeing the development of GLJ’s proprietary in-situ oil sands evaluation software.
James (Jim) Gouveia, BaSc, Chemical Engineering, University of Toronto
Mr. Gouveia is a registered Professional Engineer with a diverse technical, business and operations background in the petroleum industry. He joined Rose & Associates in March, 2002 after 21 years with Amoco and BP Energy. Mr. Gouveia has worked in a variety of technical and managerial assignments in exploration, production and reservoir engineering, strategic planning, and risk management. Prior to BP's acquisition of Amoco in 1999, Mr. Gouveia was a Director of Risk Management for the Amoco Energy Group of North America. In this role he was accountable for assurance of consistent project evaluation of major capital projects. In his last roles Mr. Gouveia led BP's strategic initiative into unconventional gas resources in Western Canada. With BP, he was a member of several task forces including a world-wide task force focused on growth initiatives in mature basins and developing a portfolio management process for BP's North American unconventional gas assets. Mr. Gouveia is a key author in the development of Rose & Associates course on the assessment of Unconventional resource plays. He has consulted with firms in North America, South America, the Middle East, S.E. Asia and Australia on the resource, reserve and economic evaluation of their Unconventional assets. Mr. Gouveia has co-authored and presented papers, most recently as a contributing author to the SPEE’s 2011 Monograph 3, “Guidelines for the practical evaluation of undeveloped reserves in Resource plays”, and SPE 185077, 175527, 175888 & 121525. Mr. Gouveia is a member of APEGA, SPE, SPEE and AAPG. Mr. Gouveia is a partner in Rose & Associates.
Jeanine Vany, P. Geo, Senior Geologist at GLJ Petroleum Consultants brings 14 years’ experience in the Canadian heavy oil and oil sands industry. Mrs. Vany’s expertise lies in preparing geological interpretations that consider risks and technical uncertainties to form the basis of client lease evaluations with a focus on the Canadian Oil Sands Region of Northern Alberta.
Prior to joining GLJ Petroleum Consultants in 2012, Mrs. Vany has worked on a diverse range of projects including full field asset development strategy for bitumen projects, the planning and execution of large stratigraphic delineation well programs, the reservoir characterization and development of CHOPS wells, and the highly publicized Gas over Bitumen Regional Study (Regional Geological Study ERCB, 2003). More recently she completed the Business Essentials program at U of C’s Haskayne School of Business and was selected as an ambassador for the program.
